I have said numerous times that this VA hospital is the best, but I shouldn't say that with 100 percent conviction. The reason I say this is I recent had a major surgery there and that was great because how well everything went, however I was not at all happy with the food. Being a Certified Dietary Manager and work in a healthcare facility I really was heart broken when it came to the meals that were served to me. The best meal was the night I came out of my anesthesia (late) and the nurse literally brought me a microwavable lean cuisine meal. Breakfast was horrible.... How do you burn scrambled eggs and still be undercooked in the middle. Lunch was much worse.... A small chunk of meat (pot roast) which was rubbery and instant (yuck) garlic mashed potatoes. Oh yeah and a cup of fruit cocktail. I was not impressed. All that being said clinically I think James Haley VA hospital as no equal, but take a closer look at your support services and demand better from them.

I have been going to the VA for all my health concerns for the last 10 years and have never had a bad experience. They are always courteous and friendly with a ready smile. They do their utmost to give me all the care and advice they can to make me a more healthy person. They provide free blood pressure monitors and many other free health aids. They endevour to do all they can for all of my problems and conduct all the required tests efficiently and professionally. The facility is always clean and sanitary with the latest in equipment and technology. They also have an online service so you can contact your primary care if you have any issues as well as a My Healthy Vet Flyer that has many helpful suggestions to maintain a healthy life and attitude. Based on my experience , private hospitals have a long way to go to be as helpful and efficient for the individual veteran as this facility does for me. And another huge plus. The copay is extremely low relative to any insurance provider. Never understood all the negatives from the press about the VA. The only negative I can say is that it's not fully manned 24hrs. a day for all your emergency needs. If it's an emergency you can opt for the local hospital and they'll foot the bill after your transferred to the local VA hospital if necessary. These guys are great !

This has to be the most incompetent VA facility I've ever been to. Trying to get labs done is a huge process and a mess. The DR orders labs and an appointment and they can never find them. Or, this is my favorite, they can't do the labs because nobody is there to do the test. They open at 6 am, but the people who draw the blood don't get there until 620 to 630. Then they have to talk for 10 minutes with each other before they can start drawing blood. It takes until after 7 for more than 1 person to come to work. It's no surprise considering they will never be fired. This VA really needs some people who actually know what's going on.

I have always had horrible luck with the VA. This week has just been another amazing example. I had to re enroll yet again, then I get a call asking to sent up an appointment. No information is left except for the call phone number ending in 8000. I call the number and wait for 35 mins just to be hung up on! I call back, get through to a person, start giving them my info, they interrupt me mid-sentence and tell me to please hold.... I then get hung up on for the 2nd time. I wait about an hour and call back, get through and go through the validation process. The woman then tells me she has no idea who called me or why but can see that I was called.... then says "hopefully they call back".... And people wonder why Veterans hate the VA.....

My doctor's nurse hardly speaks English, last time she left a voicemail I spent 30 minutes trying to decipher it, then 30 calls over the next four days trying to get through the automated system before I finally reached a human being that could explain what the voicemail was about. The call back feature is useless, I've tried it at least 10 times over the past year and hardly ever get a call back. There's also a lady in the laboratory that obviously hates her job and needs to find peace doing something else. I'm used to military medical care being relatively rude to patients but geezus at least try a little bit lab lady. There might be people in there that genuinely care but my experience has been pretty darn terrible.
