Company History
The humble idea of Jo To Go Coffee, in 1998 was to serve specialty drive through coffee, espresso, real-fruit smoothies and bakery products. Much more than a coffee kiosk, coffee bar or simple coffee stand, Jo To Go Coffee caters to busy lifestyles with speed, convenience and fun.

Founder Richard DuBois returned with the idea for Jo To Go Coffee after a family trip to the coffee-saturated locales of the Northwest U.S. After years of retail management experience and looking for new business opportunities, DuBois built a model that centered around operational excellence.

DuBois got a crash course in real estate and started his first store in Green Bay, Wisconsin. DuBois wondered what he had done by leaving a comfortable family business. But by investing in creative advertising and promotion, DuBois soon opened a second location in 1999, and a third in 2001. DuBois was named Entrepreneur of the Year by the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. DuBois then began franchising his concept and the first Jo To Go Coffee franchise store opened that same year.

By 2002, more company-owned and franchise stores were opened, and Jonathan Lukens joined the management team. Lukens brought a wealth of corporate what-not-to-do experience and a skill set that largely complimented DuBois.

Today the Jo To Go Coffee management team continues to refine the coffee franchise system, including programs, components, trademarks, site location, advertising and more. The drive thru coffee system continues to grow.

Escanaba, MI— This isn’t going to be your typical press release. I just hope you’ll bear with me as I explain why.

As a publicist for a rapidly growing company, it’s my job to place our franchisees and everything JO TO GO Coffee® related in the best possible light. I am the ultimate cup-is-half-full person in our office.
So when the Marketing Director pulled me aside and gave me the contact information for our newest franchisee way north up in God’s Country, I began to hone the interview questions that I hoped would help me hit pay dirt, which for me is the details that would help me publicly celebrate all things Matt Marenger and JO TO GO Coffee®.

But—funny thing—every time I asked Matt about his accomplishments, he shifted the focus from himself.

He talked about his Dad’s career as a successful small businessman selling farm equipment when I asked him about his motivation to open a sporting goods store as a senior at Escanaba Area High School. Many of you may be familiar with Mr. Bike Ski and Fitness. Like the name? Matt came up with it when he was eight years-old.

When I asked him the secret behind twenty-one years of business growth and success, he spoke with gratitude about the Escanaba community that cheered on an eighteen year-old kid as he chased his entrepreneurial dreams. He talked about the overwhelming support of Holly, his wife, trusted business partner and mother of his six children.

And when I asked him about the timely groundbreaking for the new JO TO GO Coffee® drive-thru coffee bar on Lincoln Road, he wanted me to be sure to point out how helpful the city was in working with him to obtain the proper permits.

As I sat at my desk, wondering what in the world I was going to say about Matt, it occurred to me that perhaps what I can’t say about Matt is what is best about Matt: he is like a mirror that reflects the good that surrounds him—family, friends, and the Escanaba community. When he begins his new adventure as owner of JO TO GO Coffee® at the beginning of the year, I hope you’ll stop in and say hi. I think you’ll like what you see (and the coffee’s really good too).
