I've known the Lujan family and have enjoyed their chiles for over 30 years and have always found them to be extremely friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and personal - for example, by guiding me to the specific parts of their fields to pick the best of the particular type of chile I am seeking - they know where it's rather muddy that day, or where it's already been pretty picked over, etc. Although you can buy their fresh chiles already picked and ready to roast, I really enjoy the opportunity to prowl the rows of chile plants and hand-pick my own choice of only the biggest, fattest, perfectly ripe and straightest peppers I can find! Their fields are well-tended with very few weeds and sick or damaged plants (except from occasional thoughtless too-rough U-pickers before me!), and the quality of the chiles has been consistently excellent (except for a few seasons when the quality was affected by weather that was way too wet or too dry). Then when it comes time to custom-roast the chiles, they actively seek my input regarding how long to scorch them to attain my desired degree of doneness - "You want them a little darker, or do you like it like this?" - sometimes even stopping the roaster so I can inspect the chiles up close. The tantalizing aroma of the roasting green chiles is so amazing that I usually have to rush straight home and make some dish using the newly roasted crop - enchiladas, caldillo, rellenos, etc., even before I bag the chiles for freezing! The prices are quite reasonable (especially considering that I am able to select only the very best peppers) and they make the entire experience very enjoyable - I usually come a couple of times per season, as some varieties mature at different times, and I often send some of the frozen chiles off to a few of my chile-deprived friends who no longer have access to "the real thing". Bottom line: Great people, quality products, reasonable prices, a friendly, convivial atmosphere, and a unique hands-on experience - go to Lujan Farms next chile-picking season and experience it for yourself!
