John A. Lau Saloon is Alpena's Oldest Historical Saloon. Serving both Lunch and Dinner

Story

At 120 years old, John'a'Lau Saloon remains one of the oldest buildings of historic downtown Alpena. Known for its ghost, Agnes Lau (former wife of the owner John Lau back in 1892), the restaurant attracts multitudes of people looking to enjoy the history of her story. Historic artifacts from 19th century Alpena adorn every inch of the Saloon walls. Many enjoy a Michigan brew while taking a step back in time. So whether a proud Alpena native or a curious traveler, stop in, eat a delectable meal, and let the wait staff tell you haunted stories of the original John'a'Lau Saloon.

Went there on Monday afternoon. Had the crab claws for an appetizer, there was nothing there the so called melted butter with garlic tasted like pure oil. We had the seafood crab bucket. Corn was way over cooked, crab legs were so tiny there was hardly any meat inside. As far as the service, it was very slow, had people come in after us and they were served and left before we were. The only thing that was good was the bottle beer and the ice tea This place was good when it first opened, not any more.

Maybe it's fond memories, but John Lau has been a safe haven for many years. The prime rib was always a go-to fav of mine....I always enjoyed the atmosphere regardless of the services employed. It's an 'up north ' hang that's brought me back many times over.

Best thing is the place/atmosphere. Otherwise, its overpriced, the food is terrible, and so is the service. We've gone back a few times hoping we were just there on an off day but no. It's just that bad. Unfortunate because it looks great - but appearances can be deceiving.

This place has so much potential. The first thing I noticed right when we walked into the restaurant was that it smelled, old and musty. Not a good first impression. We ate outside it I wouldn't of stayed. The food I would rate a 7/10, but we really enjoyed the waiter "Dakotah".

While our server was very nice young man the service was kind of slow. Our three steaks were ordered -2 medium well and one medium rare. All three came out well done. The food was good however was not brought out as we ordered.
