A cowboy hot spring hot tub, great fishing, a true frontier town, hot showers, out in the middle of no-where, free WIFI and a very well maintained airport is what you'll find a Johnson Creek. This is a true Last of the FRONTIER places. The store up the road sells animal pelts along with a small selection of essentials. I wouldn't recommend this airport to the newer pilot as getting through the mountains safely takes skill, focus and being aware of potential density altitude issues. Read up on your mountain flying before coming into Johnson for the first time.

I have flown to Johnson Creek from my home in Oklahoma many times. Love, love, love that place. One of my favorite airports in the world. As long as you have a bit of mountain flying experience or training this is an easy airport. If you don't, then it can kill you just like it has dozens of pilots. Great place to camp and hang out with other pilots, and a jumping off point to some really cool runways in the Idaho back country. A trip into Yellow Pine is a must.

In August 2009 we flew into Johnson Creek in a 1955 Tri-Pacer, with two other Tri-Pacers in our convoy. The field is very well groomed, the summer caretakers cordial and helpful. A courtesy van to ride the three miles into the Big City, Yellow Pine, with two bars/cafes and a handful of folks in the middle of nowhere. Camping on the airport is decent, good sites with fire rings, and in a pinch (ie big rainstorm) the BLM bunk houses can be opened up and you stay dry. Bath houses with hot showers, electricity, covered picnic area. Great hiking trails, streams and relaxing. There's a trail that goes up the west side of the valley for a couple miles, about 1000' above the airport, with a cast iron bathtub and warm springs piped into it - a mineral bath! Flying here is a slightly tricky approach and departure but quite doable. Overfly Yellow Pine at 9000', then circle decending to about 6000, follow the canyon south, it does an S turn, and you must be at 5000' when you break out 1/4 mile north of the runway. Use your radio 122.9 and call frequently on your approach from Yellow Pine - planes are departing back towards you! Bear a bit to the right so if you do have to pass someone coming the other way you will have room to pass. You can also fly a full pattern over the airport but again, high altitude, and close quarters make this procedure too rich for my blood with 150hp in a 56 year old Piper. Avoid flying during mid-day heat, 5000' elevation can lead to very dangerous density altitude. research this one, perfect your short field, high altitude procedures and then go with some friends, stay under gross, and use good judgement. I would not want to try a go-around here. Nearby Sulfer Creek has a great BIG breakfast available at their lodge if you want to dine out one morning.
