You HAVE to eat here!! … I’ll make this review short, but I was beyond impressed and so delighted to have found this hidden gem. Not only is the food incredible, but the fish is some of the freshest and most flavorful I’ve ever tasted. The wait staff is also simply fantastic My business partner and I asked chef if we could order omakase , he joyfully obliged - and it was the BEST sushi assortment I’ve ever had. I’ve paid over $200 per person for omakase on special occasion in San Francisco, crafted by a world renowned sushi chef … etc. This small humble family owned restaurant in Costa Mesa, gave me such a sense of satisfaction and connection to the food that I have not felt in a long time. And for that, I thank you ALL at Kappo Sui! See you soon
Excellent traditional Japanese dishes. Also high quality sushi options although sushi is far from their specialty. When available, definitely order the grilled sea eel Anago. I also love their homemade cold dipping udon Inaniwa which is thinner than standard udon. So refreshing in the summertime. Atmosphere is outdated but thats not what you come here for.
This is Japan. It's like a Japanese restaurant by Japanese for Japanese. The grilled mackerel is juicy and savory! You can have more white rice.Food: 5/5
This sushi restaurant is below average in every category. How it has a 4.6 star rating is beyond me. Just no value here. Ambiance: The stains on the carpet and ceiling show years of neglected maintenance. Food: below average quality and sized portions, above average price for sushi. The small tuna roll photo attached was $14, Shrimp tempura, $12.00. just this along with 1 Sapporo and a side of rice was $42.00 Service: not bad, but not good either. The sushi chef, was clearly drunk when we got there and and had 2 more beers while we ate. Didn't want to stay long. Finished what we ordered and quickly got out of there.
Friend brought me here for lunch. Everything is excellent and service is great. We had an appetizer that was fried rice cake in broth. Never had it before but it was amazingly good. I also had one of the best katsu-don ever for lunch.
This is really authentic Japanese food place with a casual setting and delicious, fresh sushi. The grilled fish and ice cream we had was spot on as well. the chicken karaage is seasoned perfectly and very juicy, best I've had in OC.
Low key, delicious authentic mom and pop restaurant. Food was delicious and reasonably priced and convenient. I had the grilled eggplant probably my favorite dish, Amaebi sweet shrimp, with fried head, and agedashi tofu
A great authentic JP restaurant operating by Japanese owner and staff!Food: 5/5
I don’t even know where to begin. I was in town on business and met with an associate. We had no idea where we were going to go. Just started in Costa Mesa and took off driving. Finally, I randomly picked this place off Yelp. We pulled in and admittedly I was reticent. It’s very nondescript. At the end of a strip mall, I thought it would probably be one of those places that really good or really bad. The best way I can describe the color scheme inside is 1990s Taco Bell light blue and pink. We walked in, and the place is about half full. Immediately we noticed that every customer at that time was Japanese. Taking that as a good sign, we stayed. Suffice it to say, this establishment was a revelation. My associate is a foodie who has traveled the world and has sushi at least a couple of times a week. He lives in SoCal and he’s had hundreds of styles from restaurants in the area. We were there for 2 1/2 hours. I think we ordered five courses. I’m not as educated in the cuisine as he, but everything we put in our mouth was absolutely exquisite. He stated that it was some of the best food he had ever had in any of his travels. I am 53 and encountered some flavors I had never experienced. The two of us spent hundreds of dollars, mostly because we and my associate especially couldn’t believe the quality, freshness, and deliciousness. We could not stop trying things! Zuke, our server, was amazing too. I think he was amused by us and it might’ve crossed his mind an hour in that he should probably get a form of payment considering the amount we were ordering :- Do yourself a favor and visit this place. My associate is already making plans to drive an hour and a half with his wife to visit again, get a hotel room and make a night of it. I will never go to the Irvine area again without visiting Kappo Sui. I can’t wait to take more friends and associates, and hopefully this review allows you to make the same great decision.
I had an amazing experience at Kappo Sui! It was the first time they did omakase and they hit it out of the park! The fish was super fresh and the rice was perfect, definitely coming back. Kappo Sui also has monkfish liver/ankimo, which is my favorite! The service was lovely and everyone was friendly. It wasn't too loud so my boyfriend and I could talk and hear each other.
