Killen's Barbecue

About

#2 in the country by Food Network; and 4* review by Houston Chronicle.

Story

Since Chef Ronnie Killen held his barbecue pop-ups in 2013, the goal has always been "To serve the best barbecue... period!" At Killen's BBQ, Killen showcases the marriage between a decades-long infatuation with smoked meats and his classical culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu, where he graduated with honors.
Located in the building that housed Pearland ISD's first school cafeteria where he worked as a teenager, Killen has renovated it into a 50's style diner. Our commitment to quality is evident in our salt-and-peppered-crusted brisket, pork and beef ribs, and housemade smoked sausage. The barbecue is considered Central Texas style, using different woods, different meats, and different pits for different meats. Meats are ordered by the pound, or as one-, two- or three meat plates. Brisket and beef ribs are smoked on a one-of-a-kind indoor pit central to the structure, a single-rack reverse flow firebrick pit that holds around 450 pounds of meat. The firebox that provides heat and smoke under the cooking surface flows over the meat before venting via the chimney. Pork ribs, pork butt and bone-in pork belly, chicken, turkey breast and sausage cooks on an outdoor wood-fired Oyler smoker that holds up to 1,800 pounds of meat.
Our meats are better than what you'll find at most barbecue joints because we're starting with better product, like Allen Brothers beef ribs
and brisket from Creekstone Farms. Also of note are our much-buzzed-about sauces - tangy, sweet or coffee, which we offer for sale.
Alongside the meats, we serve a mustard-based potato salad, spicy pulled pork pinto beans, bbq baked beans and coleslaw, along with Killen's legendary creamed corn and mac 'n' cheese. Desserts include creamy old-fashioned banana pudding with vanilla wafers, pecan pie with a touch of Mrs. Butterworth's syrup, bread pudding, as well as seasonal cobblers.
For beverages, Killen's offers sodas and tea, as well as domestic, import and specialty beers.

This place is crazy awesome! We were seated quickly, drinks, appetizers and food came out in excellent timing. The staff was great the atmosphere (complete with a live Band) was very uplifting and friendly. The food was really good. I was sad that we ate enough to have no left overs to take home. Beer comes in pint sizes and was also great! This place is one that we will become regulars at and recommend to everyone.

This post states that Killen's is number 2 in "America" for their brisket, and this post comes from Food Network👍. I can agree with it. I wasn't a brisket eater for 41 yrs. until I tasted their brisket. Top of the line. Hands down. Hot off the pit. Get there at 10am. They open at 11am.

Really nice choice for BBQ. A little pricey, but interesting choices and top shelf sides made perfectly. The brisket is good, but the range of other choices, particularly the beef ribs, sets Killen’s apart for me. If you’re looking for a quick reasonably priced lunch. This is probably not your place. If your looking for something to remember and a place you’ll want to go back to, Killen’s is your place. For over the top Texas barbecue, this is one to put on the list.

Killen's has some of the best barbecue in the greater Houston area. Be prepared for a little bit of spiciness and tons of flavor in the rub, sauces and sides. The meats are tender, juicy and smoked to perfection. The rub is thickly applied and unique in its taste. It has an added ingredient that goes well with the coffee bbq sauce that you'll find on the table, so there's a hint. You may have to wait in line to enjoy this local treasure, but it will be worth the wait!

I went here because I read about the reviews I saw on a social media site, but to my surprise I was not impress. I read the relatively simple menu and it was pretty straight forward. The prices were a bit high but I figured I would get my "monies worth." I reached the counter and asked for chicken and was told, "We don't have chicken;" (but it was on the menu). So I tried other options (pulled pork, brisket and jalapeno sausage). I also got the mac n cheese, baked beans and a loaded baked potato. The meats were tender, but not very flavorful. I could taste some smokiness but seasoning (salt) was lacking. The sides were something I could make better at home and have had better elsewhere. The loaded baked potato didn't even come with bacon on top. The establishment was very clean and the decor is nice as well. I wouldn't go back here anytime soon.
