Absolutely delightful hole-in-the-wall Filipino comfort food restaurant near Union Square. The food is served with a huge heaping of grandmotherly love. I ordered the tapsilog, which was perfectly flavored, followed by the crunchy-sweet turon for dessert. Fancy this place is not, but the value and quality make Kusina Ni Tess well worth a visit. Highly recommended!
Nice little Filipino restaurant that serves classic home dishes. We went for breakfast and the food did not disappoint. Our meal came with garlic rice which was a nice bonus. Price was reasonable and good portion.
I walked in and was greeted very kindly! It feels very familial here. I originally came with Chicken Adobo on my mind but they didn't have any today, as they're on a schedule of dishes during the week. I got great recommendations from the kind man in the front and I chose the Tinola to try. It was super light for a stew which I deeply enjoyed and the ginger came through perfectly next to the chicken pieces. I OF COURSE couldn't finish my order without lumpia, which was honestly perfect. Super crispy and perfectly seasoned. Calamansi was my drink of choice and I finished with a turon to-go. For the cusine and how it's a skip away from Market/downtown, it was soooo worth it.
I’m shocked I’ve never heard of this spot after months of eating out in the Tenderloin. Walked in with $20 and asked the woman to surprise me with whatever she thinks is best and walked out with a big plate of Tapsilog for $12. Seems family owned, very nice workers. Bummed I didn’t discover this place soonerTakeout: Yes
Tapsilog was very flavourful, and the lumpia was freshly cooked in front of you. Nice people working there, would come back again for sure
Been craving filipino breakfast and Kusina ni Tess delivered! Literally, I ordered to go and customized my order....love fried eggs, but didn't consider this time so my a la cart order was deslish, to include garlic rice, fried milk fish bangus, saltry fish tuyo, cassava suman sticky rice, turon fried banana roll, plus garlicky vinegar as requested. Was also impressed on the effort on going green...the to go packaging plus utensils were plant based and biodegradable....go Kusina Ni Tess for going green!
Felt like I was eating food from my mom and late grandmother. I was staying near the area and wanted an early breakfast. This place was open at 7am and I'm glad Google lead me to it. Tosilog and Embotido hit the spot and kept me full for majority of the day! Come here. The prices are diff good esp for being in the city. Filipino Comfort Food at its finest.
Quick plate & friendly people. Yummy, familiar filipino comfort foods! Counter service or order ahead online. The Laing was sweeter than I'm used to but wonderful texture. adobo chicken was tender, savory, and I thought the vinegar was just right. I ordered the 'budget' size of both and ala carte garlic rice & it lasted me two meals! For the average person it'd probably be one meal. They made sure I had a good amount of everything in each serving. The rice was a bit dry in places, and the atmosphere of the place was kinda 'meh' BUT it was quiet & the people were welcoming, which I appreciated. The budget servings were $6.50 each and the rice was $4 for a huge helping -- $17 total plus a tip. Cutlery was compostable. : Would recommend! Vegetarian options: Pretty slim. This is Filipino food, lots of fried stuff & meats. The Laing is my go-to vegeterian dish -- it's kinda like Indian saag : Dietary restrictions: Vegan would be limited but doable, gluten-free would be hard to verify. Vegetarian would be more doable. Keto would be doable if you go in aware of what you're ordering and skip the rice, and you're okay not having much for veggies to compensate.
I can confidently say that this restaurant is an absolute must-try for anyone who craves authentic Filipino food. From the moment I walked in, the fast service and warm welcome made me feel like I was back home in the Philippines. The food quality is exceptional - every dish is bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. I highly recommend the classic pork adobo and the crispy pata which are both cooked to perfection. But the best part? The affordable price! You can enjoy a feast with your family and friends without breaking the bank. Cusina ni Tess is truly a hidden gem, and I cannot recommend it enough. If you are in the area, make sure to stop by and indulge in the mouth-watering food. Trust me, you won't regret it! So, what are you waiting for? Head to Cusina ni Tess and experience a taste of the Philippines for yourself!
What an absolute hidden gem! Kusina Ni Tess was just around the corner from my hotel when I was looking for a good breakfast and it could not have been a better find! I've not eaten much Filipino food, so I wasn't sure what to order at first, but they helped me and directed us to the #1 and #2 breakfasts. They were both absolutely astoundingly good with sizable portions. Since we ate there, they also gave us beef soup as a side that was to die for-- so flavorful and warming! I've marked this as a new breakfast tradition to attend when I'm in town and I let my friends know as well.
