Campground is great for being in California. Not a lot of privacy but there's no trees anywhere so it's to be expected. Washrooms are clean enough. They have hot showers included which is a bonus. The lake is super mucky so bring a floaty toy if you plan on swimming.

We arrived during the day and there was no person at the registration booth and furthermore, there was never anyone there at the registration booth during our 2 days stay. The dumpsters were piled with trash along with trash all over the campground and no trashcans anywhere that we could see. It was quite uncomfortable to camp there since there didn't seem to be anyone supervising. No camp hosts that we could see. The campsites weren't very well maintained. We spent time picking up trash around our campsite and up and down the road from where we camped and walked. We swept the concrete pad clean where the picnic table was so we could have an area without dirt. I've never camped at such a poorly maintained campground. A park ranger came by in her truck and seemed to be oblivious to the overflowing dumpsters at the entrance and trash littered throughout the park. I've camped at a lot of campsites but never one quite so dirty and poorly maintained. The icing on the cake were the derelicts that showed up to take showers and use the campsites during the day leaving trash behind.

We camped at Kyen Campground the weekend of June 9. This was the worst camping experience we have had. Upon our arrival, there was trash near the bathrooms and in the campsites. There are no garbage cans anywhere, just dumpsters at the entrance. We literally saw people pack up and drive off without taking their garbage. Although we did see people maintaining the bathrooms, they were often plugged and unusable. This resulted in someone pooping in the shower. Disgusting! There is no ranger on site, which allowed people to illegally camp, leave trash, and be noisy ALL night. We asked the ranger we did see about the garbage, he picked up some, and asked us if the sheriff had been out the night before. This alarmed us. He said the campground has been going downhill for at least 5 years. He also told is that once the homeless shelters are full, they give them vouchers to stay at the campground. This should have been communicated to us. Later that night a group came in at 9 pm, set up camp and proceeded to drink like fish and make their campfire explode numerous times. I asked them twice to please tone it down, as we had 3 children in our group. They proceeded to make fun of us. The only help was to call the Mendocino County Sheriff, which we did. They came quickly and told them if they got called again, they would arrest everyone in their group. They quieted down some, but not quite enough. They were still loud and one guy was on the phone trying to patch things up with his girlfriend for all to hear. Later, another group had two women fighting which was scaring the children in their group. We got no sleep that night and when dawn broke, we took down camp and jetted, taking our trash with us. The lake was so full and the shore was littered with debris, which make swimming almost impossible. The people who come here are the problem and the lack of any ranger on site is to blame. We will never return.

Good, great, ugly, bad.... loud music both early in morning and late at night, freaking poison oak everywhere... submerged obstacles and dangers in the high water levels summer 2017, lame Dept of Army Corps of Engineers park rangers threatening us for water hook ups, ..... neat riparian habitat, had a Cooper's Hawk nest right beside our camp site, super cool watching mom and dad hunt and bring good to the fledgings..... bathrooms cleaned twice daily, just figure out when, because with in a few hours they are wicked thrashed.... been going there on and off since the 70s, for sure gotten worse with time ...

The campground is right off 101, probably the cheapest one for a while ($25 at the time) and right next to Mendocino Lake. It had decent access to a restroom and showers. Each campsite has a fire ring, picnic table and plenty of tent space. Most sites were on the hill leading down to the lake but shallow enough of a grade to lay a tent. You'll have to book online at recreation.gov for the site. No cash bookings IRL. Some cell service but not a lot (AT&T).
