The food is pretty good. The grilled steak chimichanga was better than the fajitas. Better than the other junk Mexican places on Hampton. We waited about twenty minutes for our check with no food left on our table. Didn’t have water for a while as well. Prices are ok. Rating 3.2 out of 5.
Nice patio, nice inside look. Can get very busy on a nice night. Food was okay. I got the chili Verde and it was solid. Wife got a jumbo spicy margarita that she liked. Service is pretty mediocre. Didn't see our waitress often yet there were 4 other servers standing around outside. My wife, who goes more often, confirmed service tends to be so-so. Wanted a second drink and got service just in time before I would have just skipped, but then was finished with my meal before the draft Modelo arrived. Did appreciate that they had a Mexican beer on draft, I feel like you don't see that often. Parking: Parking lot is tiny, so most people end up parking on the adjacent blocks, which has caused quite the drama in Southampton
La Catrina Restaurant - My wife and I ordered two chicken taco salads. The taco salad’s came drenched in water. Was told that was the cheese [water] sauce by the owner. The owner claimed all taco salads come with cheese [water] sauce. It turned into a debate with me stating all the taco salads I ordered in other restaurants came with shredded cheese and the owner claiming all taco salads come with cheese [water] sauce. The owner then asked who’s right? The people in the dining room or the people in the kitchen that make the dishes? Implying the taco salads are made drenched in cheese [water] sauce. We never got to the part about no chicken. Look at the picture, see all the water ran to one side. The owner called that cheese sauce and claimed all taco salads are made with cheese sauce. Aside from La Catrina’s taco salad being drenched in water, Google taco salad recipes and all the recipes use shredded cheese. The service was also lacking. My wife and I were late to a party of 8. We ordered our sodas and they never came. My wife had to get up and ask for chips and salsa. They took our order, then came back and asked if we were ready to order. The food came and I asked for my drinks and the others asked for refills. Then one person in the group ordered desert. Their bill came but no desert. The desert was not on the bill We waited for desert and to be re-billed. Let the debate continue, when you ordered a taco salad anywhere is it shredded cheese or cheese sauce.
We had to wait 20ish mins to get a table for 2 and there wasn't really a place to wait so we went outside but there weren't any places to sit either. Finally got a table near the bar.. the place is vibrant and lively. Chips tasted fresh and homemade. Salsa has a hint of heat, loved it! The food was good, I devoured my fish tacos. The service was decent and our server tended to us. One HUGE disappointment was the limes weren't fresh. Like I get cutting corners and using what u have but u couldn't find a fresh one in the entire restaurant.. my beer was still good without it. Parking: Tiny lot on the side near the patio seating.
La Catrina was a wonderful experience this Sunday afternoon! I agree there are parking issues and I hope those will be resolved. We were greeted and asked if we'd prefer indoor or outdoor seating. The patio was actually full so we ate inside, but it's kind that they offered it and let folks know there was a short wait. We got our drinks, chips, and salsa quickly, and placed our order. The waitstaff helped to clarify what was in the dish, which was appreciated. The Veracruz Special comes with queso on top, which isn't listed on the menu. We chatted a few more minutes and our food came! I had the Veracruz Special, grilled shrimp and fish on a bed of rice with queso, tortillas, and vegetables cauliflower, carrots, and broccoli. It was delicious and good with their spicier-than-most house salsa. My friend got the Tres Amigos nachos, and the peppers on top were vibrant, with large pieces of meat and plenty of cheese. The booths were comfortable I'm a plus sized person so this is sometimes a concern, the interior is GORGEOUS, and the staff were clearly working well as a team. The prices were also very reasonable. I'll definitely be returning, maybe on foot to avoid the parking concerns, and checking out the patio on a slower day!
Had a party of 12 and it was about a 15 minute wait. I wanted to watch the MLB playoffs so I asked to change it. They told me I had to find the channel on DirectTV so once I found it, I let them know and they changed it. I ordered the La Catrina burrito which had: 12” flour tortilla stuffed with grilled steak or chicken, rice, beans, fries, and pico de gallo. Topped with cheese dip. A bit dissapointing because no rice or beans on the side. Burrito was super light and was not really stuffed. My girlfriend got a Burrito Carne Asada which had flour tortilla stuffed with grilled steak and beans. Served with rice, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo. The food was alright. We also had a Modelo Negra and 2 Margaritas: Mango and Pina Colada.
My first time going and I live nearby. I enjoyed the atmosphere. The color scheme and design is very inviting. My waitress Rebecca was very friendly and helpful. The draft Medelo beer was super chilled and AMAZING!! And my food, ohhhh my, my dish gave me happy feet. As a red meat eating American I enjoyed the options of meat and veggies in the dish. The flavor was mouth watering. Just simply delicious. I went around 12 so there wasn't a huge crowd which was perfect. I sat in peace and enjoyed an amazing meal. I forgot the name of it however, if it comes in that black lava bowl, that's the one! If I can post a picture here, I will. Have fun and go enjoy a good meal today.
The service was friendly. The food was good. Well come back to try more items. My brother got the Michoacan Tacos. I got the Spinach Enchiladas.Food: 4/5
We just moved down the street from this place and we are so so happy we are able to live this close to a great Mexican restaurant! Tonight I told my husband I think it’s the best Mexican in the whole city. Tonight he got the grilled chimichanga and I got the chorizo tacos! His chimichanga was better than mine and I will definitely be getting that next time : We also got two spicy margaritas to go!!!
Friday night was LIT!!! Our waiter Victor was great! He was animated even with a mask on and very attentive to what we needed at the table. The drinks were the food was nice and hot and delicious!!! The music was the most surprising as it was a mix of Latin with sprinkles of urban music. It was a great Friday night date for me and my date. I'll be honest, I usually don't expect things like that on the south side of St Louis City but if this is the way business is done I will definitely be returning. Between the drinks, the ambiance of the beautiful decor, and the music, it made for a great date night. We will definitely be back. Thank you for everything Victor you were great! Also thank you to the management staff for checking on us if our waiter stepped away and thank you for playing some music that represents all of your customers. See you next Friday!
