About

At La Cocina, our dishes use Native New Mexican ingredients and spices. Proudly serving Northern New Mexico for 46 years!

Story

What's important to know about La Cocina is that it is singularly a "Northern New Mexican" restaurant. Our food is unique, and differs slightly from its cousins, "Mexican" food or "Tex-Mex." Northern New Mexican cuisine uses a combination of Mexican and Native American ingredients and spices. Us Northern locals take pride in our rich traditions and family recipes that have been handed down for generations. Many find our recipes different from what is known at typical "Mexican" restaurants, but that's ok! We love our food and traditions, and we know you will, too.

Many of our guests have come to know La Cocina for its traditional Northern New Mexican food. But did you know we can also bring it to your home, office or event location? We even offer in-house banquet facilities and party space.

We’d like to thank you for visiting La Cocina and, invite you to join us again! This is our home and our kitchen. Without you, there's no reason to keep on cookin'.

This is the best New Mexican Restaurant in Espanola. There is one other that is equal in every way but atmosphere. This is where I take visitors who are here for only one day. Everything on the menu is top notch. Great enchiladas, super chile relleños. I love their Frito pie. They also have specialty coffee and great looking desserts. (I'm always too full for dessert. This place is equal to the best of Santa Fe, and it's not full of tourists. (I'm sure there are some who find it by reading on line reviews.) This is authentic Northern New Mexico cuisine. Funny story: I once hired a local young man as a day laborer to help rearrange out warehouse. After a hard day's work I took everyone here for dinner. Everyone else ordered New Mexican specialties, except the young man. He ordered chicken fried steak. I teased him, "Why did you order chicken fried steak when I'm taking you to the best New Mexican Restaurant in town?" He said, "I get this other stuff at home every day."

Classic New Mexican cuisine, served hot and fast in a spacious but homey atmosphere. You walk in past the baked goods, delicious cakes, pies, traditional cookies and candies, passing happy diners that seem more like families gathered around dinner tables. The chips, salsa and queso are excellent to start off. If you have the option, always get the posole, huge chucks of savory meat in a well-seasoned broth. The tamales are thick and hearty. Enchiladas smothered in red chile sauce are excellent. The beans could be a meal in themselves. Save room for a hot soapapilla with honey. The service made me feel like family.

Really great family-owned business. The prices are affordable, and the portions are fair. You definitely get what you pay for. I have tried just about everything on the menu, and have been satisfied with everything I have ordered. The Chile Rellenos are definitely my favorite. The service is always great, and the staff is always friendly.
