The Lake County Bar Association is an excellent resource for both attorneys and members of the public who need to hire an attorney. The Association maintains an unbiased referral listing of attorneys who are properly licensed and insured and who practice in the area you are seeking representation in. Unlike the phone book, you get the names of attorneys who meet those qualifications. The Association also constantly offers legal training to all of its member attorneys, ensuring that they are competent in the areas they practice. They have a charitable Foundation that provides a lot of assistance to a number of Lake County Charities. All in all, you can't go wrong using the LCBA, either as an attorney or someone needing to hire an attorney.

First, the Lake County Bar Association is not supported in any way by tax dollars. It engages in many activities to help the public learn about the legal system, including programs to help the public with foreclosures and other problems. The lawyers who are members of the LCBA volunteer their time to do this and many other activities designed to help the public. The LCBA provides continuing legal education to its members and other lawyers to ensure that they stay current on the law and competent to handle cases. As part of all this, there is a lawyer referral service, which provides the names of competent lawyers who have been checked out to make sure they are properly insured and licensed. It is not biased and it is not done for profit. It is therefore the best source for people who need to find a competent lawyer.

Lake County Bar is a TOTAL WASTE of our hard earned tax dollars. After wasting several minutes finding out what they don't do, I asked what they did do. They said the "client" says what kind of attorney they need, and they provide up to three names. To clarify I said, "So... you're basically like a phone book, without any extra information (like addresses, for example)?". The woman paused for a moment, then replied, "Yes". She did say that she's "supposed" to say ahead of time that the lawyers they refer to do not "do" pro bono (one piece of intel I had kind of gathered myself by then).
