About

Welcome to Laughing Whale where we take coffee very seriously.

Mission

Coffee is big business. Especially for the countries in which coffee is grown and shipped, the economics of coffee are the economics of people. Millions of folks on both ends of the shipping chain rely on coffee for their livelihoods.

Unfortunately, both in the history of the coffee trade and in contemporary practice, those livelihoods have often been marked by exploitation and poverty. That exploitation has reached beyond humans as well, to unsustainable farming practices including high pesticide and chemical fertilizer use and clearcutting.

At Laughing Whale, we believe that long-term protection of our environment, including the people within it, is more important than maximizing short-term profits. For this reason we support and participate in independent third-part certification of fair trade practices. In the absence of this type of certification, companies could easily clam fair trade status without any substantive change in their business practices (as, sadly, some do). Fair trade standards such as those offered by Transfair Canada don’t just enforce minimum standards of practice—they create space for the voice of producers to be heard, and give support to sustainable cropping practices.

Since our inception, we have sold coffee through our local farmers' markets—not only do we get to support local food production and circulate money in our local economy, we get to enjoy all of our neighbors, from babies to sages, in one place! We use biodegradable cups and containers, and offer a discount to customers who bring their own mug. In keeping with our values, we donate twenty-five cents for every pound of coffee sold to the Ecology Action Centre to assist in their environmental advocacy work here in Nova Scotia.

We are also proud to announce that here at Laughing Whale all our coffee is processed in an emissions-free roaster. The only one of its kind in Canada, “MoJoe” is an 18 kilogram roaster with a catalytic tower that burns over 95% of smoke emissions, releasing clean, hot air back into the roaster for reuse. The solid waste left from the catalytic tower, along with our used coffee grounds, are given to local organic farmers for creating compost and soil conditioner—terrific for keeping wire worms away from the carrots!

A coffee roasting shop?? That sells coffee out of pump style canteens??? And won't answer a simple inquiry as to when it was brewed? I think Timmys brews it up every 15 mins!! Also the olive swirl pastry was at LEAST a full day old and tough as a leather boot! Certainly NOT worth the money!!! Won't be back.

It's OK. Was kind of disappointed to be honest. Kind of an odd setup blended with retail. Potential to do sooo much better.
