Browse for inspiration. I have purchased several books on impulse, just by walking toward the “activism” or “diversity” sections and finding books that were exactly what I didn’t know I was looking for. So now I just wander in for advice whenever I’m nearby in Oakland— usually grabbing coffee at Awaken Cafe next door. Last visit I saw one of the staff spending quite awhile helping an older gentlemen choose the perfect books for his 10 year old grandson. It’s a lovely place, I’m glad to have it in the city center.

I went to Laurel Book Store for a book reading and was in for a great surprise.  Laurel Books is located in the Frank Ogawa Plaza, adjacent to the 12th street Oakland BART station for easy access (parking was a challenge as a performance was happening at the nearby Fox Theater, although there is a public parking garage across the plaza).  I'd had the good fortune to meet Luisa, the warm and friendly shop owner, on a previous occasion.  I was glad to see her again, beaming in pride that people so embrace the store by coming to book readings, offering readings and events, and using the spacious store as a community gathering spot. You can tell she genuinely cares about her customers and the community.  I loved the casual vibe, the friendliness of the sales people, the amazing selection of books, the kids' room, and the sense of Oakland "pride" and community cultivated within its walls.   I will visit often to continue supporting this treasured Oakland icon.

Forget how much I love bookstore and then stop by Laurel books and realuze I could spend hours looking at books.  I love holding an actual book, look at pictures, something a tablet can ever replace

A community bookstore with a wonderfully curated selection, friendly people, and vibrant events calendar. Easy to visit (just steps away from BART exit A4 at 12th St. Station, 14th and Broadway) and woman/queer-owned. If it's not on the shelf, they'll order it for you! Shop local!
