I am an experienced attorney, with almost 30 years of Illinois family law experience. My practice focuses on family law, including divorce, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal maintenance (also called alimony) and property and debt division. I also do estate planning, including powers of attorney, wills and various trusts,. I represent same sex couples for estate planning, pre-civil union agreements and dissolution of civil unions.

KAREN WAS A PHENOMINAL LAWYER TO WORK WITH; MY TIME WITH HER STARTED LAST NOVEMBER WHEN I HAD AN EMERGENCY ORDER OF PROTECTION REQUIREMENT AGAINST MY EX HUSBAND.  WITHIN MINUTES OF HEARING THE EXPLAINATION, SHE WENT STRAIGHT TO WORK, GETTING ME IN THE VERY NEXT MORNING AND THE OP WAS GRANTED.  MY EX AND I SPENT MONTHS GOING BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN CUSTODY, CHILD SUPPORT AND A MIRIADE OF OTHER ISSUES.  THROUGH IT ALL, KAREN WAS THERE EVERY STEP OF THE WAY!  THERE WAS NEVER A QUESTION TO "SILLY" NOR DID I EVER FEEL AS THOUGH MY CASE WASN'T IMPORTANT.  SHE REALLY TOOK CARE OF ME, MY SON AND WAS ABLE TO HELP UP GET EVERYTHING FILED AND APPROVED, JUST AS WE WANTED IT.  AS WITH ANYTHING THAT TAKES OVER 8 MONTHS, THERE WERE BUMPS ALONG THE ROAD BUT, KAREN KEPT ME INFORMED AND I FELT LIKE SHE REALLY WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT ANY LAWYER SHOULD HAVE.  I WOULD USE HER AGAIN IF THE TIME EVER ARISED!

If I could give her a zero I would. My husband hired her to finish an MSA with his ex wife. She bled us dry and we are still hiring new attorneys to fix the holes she left in his MSA. We spend between 500-1000 dollars a month in "expenses" because she pressured us into signing a vague MSA. In our opinion the worst lawyer we have dealt with out of 5. IMO Does not have the client in mind only but her bottom line income. Karen was not detail oriented and ruined our lives until the children graduate H.S. STAY AWAY

Karen Lavin is an amazing, self determined, hard-working woman. She's always helping others and doing it with a smile on her face. When others lack certainty as to legal matters, Karen is right there to pick up the pieces, and does so with such passion. But don't let her beautiful smile fool you, she is about seriousness when it comes to her clients' well-being and making sure they get the justice they deserve.

Karen Lavin has very capably handled a variety of legal tasks for my family, including an adoption, damage suit against a home contractor and our estate planning.  She is a careful listener, extremely thorough, and not only timely in  her follow-through, but persistent and determined.  I have recommended her frequently to others and heard only positive feedback.  In fact, the local paper has reported for each of the last two years that she was awarded the "Excellence in the Legal Profession" award by the Martindale-Hubbell organization, a peer review rating.  In addition, I admire her community-service and commitment to social justice, demonstrated by the donation of large amounts of personal time to a variety of local and international causes.  I highly and unequivocally recommend her for any of your family law needs.
