About

Lodge Bread Co. specializes in “slow” bread crafted with organically-grown, seasonal whole grains using a naturally leavened process that allows for wild fermentation. 2017 James Beard Foundation semifinalist in the category of Outstanding Baker.

Story

Lodge Bread Co. began as a backyard experiment after two young chefs, killing time after work, decided to each try their hands at a sourdough starter. They carried their starters in large cylindrical storage containers — to work, to home, on vacation — feeding the hungry babies organic wheat and filtered water. And they baked and baked and baked, specializing in “slow” bread crafted with organically-grown, seasonal whole grains using a naturally leavened process that allows for wild fermentation.

In November 2015, Lodge opened its doors and was welcomed with open arms by Culver City and the greater Los Angeles community. In 2017, Lodge expanded to become a restaurant and bakery, now open daily with pizza, wine, and beer in a space designed by Omgivning Architects.

The James Beard Foundation recognized Lodge Bread’s bakers/owners Alexander Phaneuf and Or Amsalam as 2017 semifinalists in the category of Outstanding Baker.

Mission

Lodge Bread Company is the brainchild of chefs Alexander Phaneuf and Or Amsalam, and hearkens back to the ancient days of hand mixed dough and slow crafted food that was meant to feed the people with its local crops.

Great local bakery offering unique choices of baked goods. I went there for their bread but also tried out a few items on the menu. Within our group, we ordered toasts, banana bread, bread pudding, and cinnamon bun. The banana bread and bread pudding were my favorite. Not overly sweet and good balance to let other flavors shine. The toasts (we got strawberry jam/butter and blueberry/ricotta) were not bad but nothing too extraordinary. Although, I think the jam was good but the combination was a bit too salty for me. Cinnamon bun was average but the size of the bun was above average. We ended up having to take this home. Would go again next time to pick up more bread and try out their pizzas.

Top-notch eatery in Culver City, one that rose in a reinvigorated form after a recent renovation. The best-in-class breads are to be expected, but what really impresses are the quality dishes produced in the kitchen. Though some veer a bit too sharply in a certain flavor direction—for example, bitter vegetables or slightly too salty hummus—most are compelling and well-balanced. The toasts are top-notch, and the espresso shots are expertly delivered. To boot, they offer a robust array of pastries and desserts. You can't go wrong with this unique eatery on Washington Blvd!

Horrible experience. Went in to eat pizza and have a beer. There was no beer. Asked them just to make cheese pizza for the kids and were told that wasn't possible, the best they could do was make margherita pizzas for them. The water we were served was warm. So over priced. Haven't been back.

Great food and mimosas! Service is pretty good, better than most but I rarely ever give 5 stars. Highly recommend!

Came here around noon on a Saturday and got lucky with parking in the neighborhood. It was packed but managed to get a seat on a communal table. The pizza was beyond amazing as well as the ricotta toast. Can't wait to come back to try other items.
