Story

Madison Square Garden was an arena in New York City located on the northeast corner of East 26th Street and Madison Avenue in Manhattan. The first venue to use that name had a seating capacity of 10,000 spectators. It operated from 1879 to 1890, when it was replaced with a new building on the same site. Before the GardenThe site upon which Madison Square Garden was eventually established was originally occupied by a small passenger depot of the New York and Harlem Railroad. The site was vacated by the railroad in 1871 when it was moved uptown. The site was vacant until 1874 when it was leased to P. T. Barnum who converted it into an open oval arena 270ft long, with seats and benches in banks, which he named the Great Roman Hippodrome where he presented circuses and other performances. The roofless building was also called Barnum's Monster Classical and Geological Hippodrome and measured 420ft by 200ft.In 1876 the open-air arena was leased to band leader Patrick Gilmore, who renamed it Gilmore's Garden and presented flower shows, beauty contests, music concerts, temperance and revival meetings, walking marathons and the first Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, called at the time (1877) the "First Annual N.Y. Bench Show." Gilmore also presented boxing, but since competitive boxing matches were technically illegal at the time, he called them "exhibitions" or "illustrated lectures."

One the of the key places you just have to go to when in New York. I was expecting bug queues going in but they manage it really well so we got through in no time. Everyone working there was so helpful and friendly. We seen a basketball game which was cool and the entertainment throughout was also amazing. The only downside was that food and drinks were quite expensive but overall it was a brilliant experience.

We saw Dave Mathews there. We had a blast except for the fact we were all dripping sweat. Inside venue that you should treat like an outside venue when trying to avoid heat stroke. Place needs an AC upgrade or tear down. Will be trying to avoid this place moving forward. Only bonus was coming up to it directly from the subway. Easy in easy out. Leave a half hour early to avoid the crazy rush!

This venue is amazing. There is so much room for people. We went to a phish concert here 2 nights in a row, one of the nights being new Years and we were not disappointed. The rest rooms and service center are in very convenient locations all around the venue easy to locate. We had a great time and an easy time getting in and out. Awesome place!

We visited there to see Elf the musical for the holidays. Seating is expansive and there are no terrible seats. Wonderful concession stand though a bit pricey but I would do it again and again. Nice people and kind to children which is very important.

A must see in New York however great acts and sports. Staff were super helpful professional and friendly. However drinks and food were extremely expensive. You expect in a closed Venus to pay over the normal prices but a can of beer was $12 dollars which even in an expensive convenience store is maybe $2 its a bit of a premium. Really clean, tidy and well looked after venue with great staff so it depends on what you are willing to pay for.
