Once again, someone on vacation and the police in this lovely little blip in the road decided to make money for the day. It is nothing but a tourist trap. My husband was caught doing 40 in a 30. The officer and I use the term loosely pulled us over. We were very respectful and truthful figuring he might give us a break. We are 70 and no tickets or anything on our licenses. Nope, the jerk gave us a $140 speeding ticket. If someone knows how to put a warning up for anyone, especially tourists, to not go through this jerk-water town, please do so. Does anyone know how or if Google would put it as a speed trap in the directions part. This is sad, I live in a tourist town in Michigan and we do NOT treat our visitors this way. Take a lesson, dip-town. That star is only because I had to put it there to post this.
The town, police, judge, and attorney all live off the predatory speed trap they call a town. Preying on out of state visitors on their way to Yellowstone National Park, claiming to have used their radar. If they were concerned about the town’s safety, they would have a warning sign posted for the upcoming speed reduction, but instead they create arbitrary fines to burden families who take road trips in their 11 year old minivans to save money. Officer Kidgell is a visually intimidating man with a terrible attitude and the questions he asked us come off a script that is well documented online. What a sad existence for both this man and this “town.” All the 87 residents should be ashamed.
Ghost town, speed trap. Hired 3 policemen for a 89 resident "town" only targeting out of state visitors to Yellowstone. The police, attorney and judge all colluded. They all need to be investigated.
Like most of the other people who have written a review, I am an out-of-tower who received a speeding ticket driving through Manderson WY. The ticket was 43/30. Below are two images, both of which have been edited with my subpar Microsoft Paint skills. Image 1: Picture of the speed limit sign. Image 2: Map of the area pulled from google maps. I've marked on the map the location I was pulled over, the location of the two police vehicles I encountered, the location of the Speed limit sign, S Sherman Ave/Marshall St, and U.S. Route 20. Here's what happened: My GF and I were doing a road trip from MN to Yellowstone and back. This was on our return drive on US Route 20 70 mph. Our GPS app Apple Maps had a technical issue approximately 1 mile out of town, resulting in the app needing to be closed and reopened. We quickly rushed to get the GPS working again, however due to poor internet service T-Mobile is abysmal in Wyoming we did not get the instructions until a few hundred feet before we were supposed to turn. Afraid of missing my turn, I turned onto S Sherman Ave faster than I normally would have given proper notice. I did not notice the speed limit change sign. As S Sherman was transitioning to Marshall St, I noticed an older law enforcement vehicle, a Crown Victoria see 2 on map parked on the side of the road. After passing this vehicle, I see in my rearview mirror another law enforcement vehicle 1, a dodge charger, turn from railway street onto Marshall behind me and promptly pulled me over. If I were to make a speculation, 2 got the speed and then 1 pulled me over. The law enforcement officer was polite and curious during the traffic stop. The traffic stop was stereotypical; he asked for license and registration, asked me if I knew what the speed limit is, asked if I knew how fast I was going, etc I did not have any good answers to these questions. We also made small talk where we told him a bit about our trip so far. One unusual thing was he commented how our car had a strong citrus aroma. We explain how this could be due to the hand sanitizer we had in the car, scented lotion, or that we were recently eating oranges. The officer then informed me that he would write a citation for speeding. I was initially quite upset because of this traffic stop. I did not see a sign when coming in and felt it was an unfair ticket. Once we got cell phone service again I started looking up everything I could on the matter, Wyoming ticket laws, Ticket Lawyers, and the town of Manderson itself. Many of the get-rid-of-ticket companies, such as "OfftherecordTM" do not serve this area. I did get ahold of one company which quoted legal fees of $750 up front plus additional costs. I did not try and seek any local attorneys for consultation as I could not find one online who seemed legitimate. During my search of Manderson I noticed that I was not alone in my ticket troubles with this town, I found around 100 reports of Manderson WY being called a "Speed Trap". I also called some people in the area to find out how this "speed trap" came to be. My understanding is that the State of Wyoming controls the speed limits on all highways, including the posting of signs. It is out of the jurisdiction of the Manderson township to post their own speed limit signs for S Sherman and Marshall as this road is part of Wyoming Highway 31. Apparently there is even a push from the township to put a more visible sign on the road, but the State has not done anything. All of the people who I spoke with were exceptionally helpful and friendly Shoutout to Liz from Town Hall for being awesome, she's the reason I'm rating this 5 stars. I have taken no formal action on my ticket as of writing this review. I will not post any updates to this review.
this town has 150k in police vehicles and an extremely underfunded school system. they use fraudulent speeding tickets as revenue. they should have their police department disbanded. 0 stars. avoid this town like the plague.
Manderson now has four part time police officers, it has become a speed trap, watch coming into town on highway 31, also watch driving past on highway 16/20/789 a good chance one officer is working. The town is bragging about the new revenue source. This officer is sitting on 16/20/789 north bound
Crooked town crooked cops. It’s an embarrassment. Got cited for $274 while headed to Yellowstone. Sent a check in the mail and 5 months later get a notice my license is going to be suspended. They do not answer the phone either. Avoid this place at all costs. Pathetic.
The town of Manderson Wyoming is nothing but a speed trap! $188 fine. Thank you officer Kidgell, you made my trip to Yellowstone so “special”!!!
The rest of these reviews are 100% accurate. The cop asked how fast I was going and I said I didn’t think I was speeding and he said I was going 41 in a 30. Well right where the rail road tracks are is a sharp corner so there’s no way I was speeding. I’m from Minnesota and have never been pulled over before. First time and I get a $167 fine. What a joke. Never coming through this town again.
We recently visited Wyoming for a two week vacation and followed google maps recommended route to Yellowstone East Entrance. The town of Manderson Wyoming is nothing but a speed trap. Stay on Route 90 through Spearfish! Avoid this town at all costs. The police sit in unmarked cars where the speed limit changes and they radar you while you are still in the higher speed zone but cite you as if you were speeded in the lower speed zone!
