The Manhattan Jewish Congregation is a unique Jewish community. We are the only organized Jewish Congregation in the city.
Numbering about 35 families plus many individuals, we are a completely "lay-led" congregation. We reach out to Topeka, Wichita, and Kansas City on occasion for special Rabbinical services such as weddings and funerals. However, we conduct all of our own Shabbat, Holiday and special worship services. We prepare our children for Bar/Bat Mitzvah and other life-cycle events.
We have a reputation for doing our best to incorporate the traditions and rich backgrounds of the great variety of people who participate. We are very proud of our tradition.
Shabbat Services are conducted every Friday evening starting at 7:30 In keeping with our tradition, services are led by volunteers from the Congregation. All members and guests are welcome at these services.
High Holy Day and Festival Services are also conducted by members. The Ritual Committee plans the High Holy Day services and involves anyone interested in participating in the leadership of the many services during these important days. Torah readings and sermons are always part of these observances. Festival services are often provided by volunteers in conjunction with the congregation's celebration of the day. As always, the leaders are encouraged to share their own rich traditions during these meaningful days.
Life Cycle Celebrations such as Baby Naming, Brit, Consecration, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Confirmation, etc. are major events in our small Congregation. We all take great pride and participate in these events. We are a family that takes great joy in the passages of our children through Jewish Life.
Other worship opportunities are limited only by the interest of members. Creative services, Saturday morning worship, Havdalah, and others are incorporated from time to time. One of the unique qualities of our Congregation is its openness to include the ideas, traditions, skills, and participation of its members.
