This is a very underappreciated, historic masjid (mosque) of America.  It is the third or fourth location of what used to be the Nation of Islam's Temple Number 1, the first "temple" of the NOI established by the founder of the movement himself, the mysterious "Master" Fard Muhammad.  In 1975, under the leadership of Imam Warith Deen Muhammad (rahimahullah), it transitioned into a regular, orthodox (Sunni) Muslim masjid.  It has regular five times salaat (prayer) now.  It has been at this location since the early 60's!  The neighborhood is still poor and run down.  The majority of the congregation is African-American and ageing.   The place really deserves a proper refurbishment and some informational posters and plaques inside to encourage more inter-city visitors and also American Muslim tourists.  Side-note: There is a small Muslim fast-food take-out that is walking distance from the masjid and does very good fried fish and chicken.

I LOVE visiting this mosque when I come home. Everyone is  friendly, nice and family orientated.

Feels like I'm reading a spiritual book of the prophet and hearing it manifest itself...Great place to attend.
