Negative State Inspection Experience—Maximum Auto

I took my car to Maximum Auto a week ago for state inspection. I was told that I needed new front brake pads in order to pass. When I checked them out, they appeared low—but not yet low enough to be a safety concern. After the office manager quoted me $220 to put on new pads and machine the rotors (one of which showed one light score mark), I said that I would do the work myself and then bring the vehicle back for the inspection sticker. Both the office manager and business owner made it clear that they were not pleased with my decision.

When I removed the old brake pads and installed new ones, the thinnest of the old pads was 4/32nds of an inch. This is twice the state-established threshold (2/32nds) for failing safety inspection. Did the front brakes need to be replaced soon? Yes. Should the brakes have failed state inspection? No. When I returned to get my sticker, I politely raised this issue with the owner. He became agitated and eventually asked me not to return to his business.

Maximum Auto certainly had every right to alert me to an upcoming maintenance need on my car and to provide me a quote. However, I was disappointed that they used the state inspection as an occasion to require me to get this work done—preferably by them. I did not feel that I was treated with respect, courtesy, or professionalism. Nor was I left with the confidence that staff were looking out for my best interests. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this business.

Bought a quality set of tires from Pete at Maximum Auto in late 2012 for my Honda Element. The installation and alignment was perfect.
Back again recently for another rotate, balance & alignment. These people know how to provide quality service! Thanks again
