History of the McDowell Public Library
In October 1936 McDowell Woman's and Jr. Woman's Club started a library with 36 books in the Carter Hotel Building located in Welch. The group of ladies opened another in 1954 at the Masonic Building. By having lots of support from the community they were able to have two more branches, one in Coalwood and the other in Keystone. In 1979, a fire destroyed City Hall and the library. In 1981, ground was broken to construct the new library and in 1982, the building was completed. Today, the McDowell Public Library has three branches in Bradshaw, Iaeger, and Northfork.
