When visiting San Francisco this seems to be a staple of this area. I tried the tuna melt it was good. My parents tried the creole fried chicken sandwich they said it was ok. They also offer breakfast all day which I ordered on another day. I got the Denver omelette with peppers and cheese hash browns and sourdough toast. I also try the famous Mel's burger it was good. So as you can see they have several options try it out for yourself.
I was there for breakfast and it was fantastic, especially the sausage. Quick service. Very clean place. 4 stars only because they were out of hash browns.
Typical American style kitchen and bar. Nice relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff. Great to start the day with a breakfast, and finish it with a cocktail in the evening. I spent wo days in San Francisco and that was my go-to place when I wanted a break. Can only recommend…
First impression: Is it a bar? A diner? A restaurant? I don't know what they're going for. There were some umbrella bags at the door. The place was nearly empty which made sense because it was 3:50 PM. I had to wait for a while for someone to see my vaccination card and ID and give me a menu. The person was also doubling as a waitress and bartender. I didn't like my seat, so I moved to a different one up a few steps. The person stated "I don't serve up there." Why are there seats there in the first place then? I moved back down. I wasn't very hungry, so I wanted to order a kids grilled cheese with tomato soup. I found out that it's restricted to people under 12. I feel like that should've been put on the menu. I settled with the 6oz steak with hash browns and three eggs and iced tea as a drink. I had my eggs scrambled. The steak definitely needed more salt. Luckily, there was a salt shaker. The steak sauce was a bit too sour for me. The hash brown was wonderful—crispy, held together well, and didn't need any help but the ketchup was welcome. There were also two slices of toast with some softened butter and Smucker's jelly. The iced tea wasn't sweetened which was fine for me. After eating and paying, I went to the restroom. It was very clean. However, the paper towels being right next to the urinal, like really right next, made it very awkward to dry my hands while another guy was peeing. The urinal was attached to the wall. The man was standing in front of the urinal. The paper towel dispenser was placed right behind him on the wall to his right. Good thing I discovered that there was also a hand dryer available on the other side of the restroom. Overall, it was just okay. The service could've been better. The food could've been better. Everything could've been better, but it wasn't a horrible experience. Solid three stars. Originally reviewed on Dec 13th, 2021. Edits on Feb 17, 2022: Fixed spelling.
Spent it with my wife and two youngest who made the jump to move to the city for school. Service can use a little better communication and attentiveness. Other than that the food was good not great for my girls. But for me the nachos rib was excellent. Chips were freshly made, avocado fresh as well, and the amount of meat and condiments were perfect.
This used to be a Mel's diner, but due to inflation it because a Mel's Kitchen. The atmosphere is upish scale compared to what it was before. I'm surprised I. What they are trying to do since the food is essential the same as the diner. The food was good, you still pay SF prices for a diner and maybe a bit more since this was upgraded. It has large window that face Van Ness and the other side road, which made it wonderful for our last visit to see someone shouting directly at us from the sidewalk.
Great service and excellent breakfast options. Friendly, relaxing place to hang out with family and friends.
A member of the hotel staff at the adjoining hotel warned us to not go but we thought we'd try for ourselves. We should have listened. The restaurant was nearly empty: maybe three people at the counter already eating and one or two other tables, also already eating. After being seated we waited at least ten minutes without anyone checking with us or bringing us water. When we gestured that we'd like some service the host/server impolitely told us to wait. At that point, we left. Instead ordered some delicious Indian food that was delivered without incident.
I did not like my last visit to Mel’s. The burger was unmemorable and the butterscotch shake similarly bland. I really hoped for more. My brother enjoyed his breakfast eggs and hashbrowns better. The dining room is clean and comfortable. It was toward the end of the day and the service was attentive if not a bit burned out. It felt like the whole crew had a long day and wanted to just go home. I get it. Still we will not return to Mels any time soon.
UPDATE: We went back a couple nights later and had a much better experience so we must have caught them on an off night the first time. The French dip sandwich and fries were delish and so was the strawberry milkshake. ORIGINAL: We tried this restaurant because it was attached to our hotel. Overall the food was good but the service had plenty of room for improvement. Our server wasn't very friendly at all and gave off a vibe like she was either annoyed with us eating there or she was having a bad day, I'm not sure which. Either way, it was uncomfortable. Also, we found it weird that they discontinued their discount for hotel guests due to "covid." Seems like they would want to encourage people to eat in their restaurant, considering all the other options that are nearby. The burger was pretty good but the fries had a bit too much black pepper on them which is not what one expects when ordering a burger and fries.
