This is a private zoo that does not receive corporate subsidies so please don't compare it with such. Every building, fence, prop, and enclosure was build by the owner and his team! These folks LOVE animals and bless all of us with their awesome live cams when newly born critters arrive. There's plenty of interactive people-to-animal opportunities here that you won't get at a corporate sponsored zoo like feeding giraffes, goats, and birds. Seeing the face of a toddler holding a birdseed-covered stick while dozens of parakeets happily fly past him is priceless. A train ride through live Safari animals or a Sky Ride over them are two more opportunities that make this zoo unique. Lastly, don't miss their FREE Miracle of Christmas event every December 21, 22, & 23.

Had an amazing day! The D.C. Zoo may not have an admission fee, but it also doesn't have half the great things that the Metro Richmond Zoo has. For $20 you can see so many different animals up close and ride a safari train to see more, Walk in with budgie birds and feed giraffes. I would pay more to be honest ;) The animals seem very comfortable and looks like the zoo is always eager to make improvements to enclosures. A perfect way to spend a day.

I love the convenience of driving right up to the zoo, paying the entrance fee and enjoying the park. We've always had a lot of fun and the animals are beautiful. We love the train. I do think everything is pricey but I guess that's the price to pay to ensure the animals are well taken care of. :). Feed the giraffes! Too fun!

This zoo is fantastic for its size. It began as a family operation and it's been exciting to see how it's grown in the past two decades. A lot of great care goes into the lives of the animals kept there. There's a "Savannah" area where several species are mixed together to leisurely roam across a large field with a lake in the middle. You can hand feed the giraffes on walkways that put you at eye level with the animals. It's a real gem of Richmond and definitely worth the day trip!

Do not pay to visit this zoo. My comments here are specific to problems with the enclosures of the big cats. The zoo violates the natural behaviors of big cats. Although the enclosures are larger than you might see at some places with the exception of the far too small snow leopard enclosure, the cats have no place to hide, which is natural behavior, and they all must sleep in night houses after closing. This violates the nocturnal behavior of roaming at night. Zoos often use this practice to make sure the cats are active for the paying public each morning. In addition, a big cat's brain is hard-wired to seek prey, cull the herds and keep them moving and they cannot do this in these enclosures. The tiger enclosure does not have platforms, toys, or a water pool (tigers like water) and the tiger was just pacing back and forth in front of the viewing window. This zoo does not have adequate space for the tigers and snow leopards. One tiger and the male snow leopard had to stay in a tiny cage behind the regular enclosure and in the night house respectively on the day I visited. The keepers said the cats took turns being outside. Each cat should have its own enclosure. The cheetahs and zebras are separated only by a chain link fence and could touch each other. This may cause anxiety for the zebras to be so close to a predator. If you are someone who makes decisions about where to take your family based on an owner's social ethics consider that this zoo has an aggressive breeding program. The keepers say cubs are often sold to other zoos. I figured from the website that this zoo has at least 15 cheetahs but just four adults are on display. The keeper said the others are at another site and the public cannot see them.
