Story

In 2007, Misericordia achieved university status to allow for greater academic offerings while still remaining personal and student-focused.

Misericordia University provides a quality education through the tenets of mercy, service, justice and hospitality-charisms set forth by the school’s founders, the Sisters of Mercy. The college has been guided by these principles for more than 83 years.

Misericordia was founded as, and continues to be, a broad-based liberal arts and pre-professional studies college offering superior education to those of all faiths. The college has been co-educational since the 1970s and offers graduate programs as well. Today, Misericordia University is still located on the original grounds, but has expanded to 120 acres, situated in a suburban setting just eight miles from downtown Wilkes-Barre. Total enrollment is currently more than 2,300 students, including full and part-time undergraduates and graduate students.

Classroom size is purposefully small to ensure personalized attention. The student-to-faculty ratio continues to be approximately 13 to one, allowing the instructors and students to better relate in the classroom setting with more individualized attention. And although the classes may be small, MU still gives students the collegiate experience in a big way. There are more than two dozen social clubs and organizations available on campus.

Misericordia realizes that athletics are an important part of college life. The school has had an athletics program since 1932, when it introduced intramural sports. Students can choose from 21 women’s and men’s varsity sports, including lacrosse and track and field. And as a Division III school, the Misericordia University Cougars compete in the Middle Atlantic Corporation's Freedom Conference.

The university provides a progressive student-focused environment fostered by its 94 full-time faculty. This group of distinguished professors is dedicated to providing excellence in education. In fact, more than 80 percent of the school’s faculty hold a Ph.D. or other terminal degree. Today, students can choose from 30 majors in three Academic Colleges: Arts and Sciences; Health Sciences; and Professional Studies and Social Sciences.

My son is currently a freshman at Misericordia University. The campus is beautiful with a small hometown feeling. The staff are friendly and everyone is approachable and willing to make you feel like part of a large family. Very impressed.

As a student from out of state (born and raised in Arizona), attending Misericordia University has been a very unique experience for me. The location has been comfortable, coming from a small town, so the location has not been overwhelmingly populated while still being close enough to other cities and shopping locations. MU also assisted in my decision to switch majors, and have been a Mass Communications student with a Philosophy minor since my sophomore year. Students with interests in the arts and and humanities, like myself, often feel as if they are not taken as seriously as other majors, such as health sciences. However, I feel that MU’s liberal arts approach embraces all student interests, including encouraging creativity while also helping students get to know the “real world” and how to approach the world from a realistic and economic perspective. Getting involved at MU has also been fairly easy and a welcome experience for me. The Mass Communications department is tight-knit but is welcoming of all students, and has job, classes, or club opportunities for students in and outside of the major. The arts are also embraced by the campus radio station (Cougar Radio), the Highlander newspaper, etc. I’ve participated in multiple groups and events on campus, and have found student employment on campus, along with researching, preparing for, and currently executing internships during my college career. I’m a firm believer that college is what you make it, and MU has helped me embrace all these passions that I’ve always had and has helped me move forward with the things that matter most to me.
