Stopped in for lunch on our way to the beach and found Mj's to be a great little seafood place. Ordered the First Mate's Platter and the Mj's Crab Pretzel, which is touted as one of their signature appetizers. The plater was excellent! We went with the oysters raw, and the clams steamed. The oysters were REALLY good. The clams were on the smaller side but super tasty. The shrimp was perfect! The pretzel was good but a bit soggy under the crab dip. If it was crispy, it probably would have lived up to the hype. The cheesy crab dip was solid. Our server, Joy was perfect. Attentive & friendly in the way an experienced server knows how to be. As far as the atmosphere, it's a cute place but the decor the super cool model boats needs a good dusting.
Small spot, but lots of big flavor. Very extensive menu but not too overwhelming. Everything was delicious and bold. Our table had the tuna crisp, gator bites, grouper fingers, crab dip burger, and speaking as a ranch connoisseur, the ranch is FANTASTIC. Great service and atmosphere.Food: 5/5
Finally, we made it here, and now we're asking ourselves why we didn't come sooner. The dishes we ordered were flavorful. We had the crab pretzel and calamari. The first one is definitely worth it! Be prepared to share as it's a huge portion. The calamari didn't really knock our socks off but again, good portion. For entrees, we had the seafood pot pie yum!, seafood trifecta, and the bermuda triangle. The crab stuffed mushrooms in the trifecta entree had chunks of crab. Hardly any breading. Service was quick and pleasant. Will definitely come back to try the other menu items.
I was lucky to wander into this popular local spot. The place was busy, which always attracts my attention when I'm hungry. It was just me, so I sat at the bar where they had the football game on. The bartender was very friendly and helpful with the menu. I ordered grouper fish and chips with bacon grits and a salad. The salad came out in a chilled bowl with homemade ranch dressing. Yum. I was pleasantly surprised by the grits, the texture was perfect, and they were packed with flavor. The fish was not over breaded, the filets were moist, and I enjoyed them with just lemon and both the tarter sauces he gave me to try. A definite must try if you are in New Bern.
My boyfriend, baby and I are from Ohio and had a vacation here for the last week. We love seafood and decided to try this place, it was absolutely amazing!!! So amazing that we went back to this place for 3 days. Our server Jenna was also amazing and very helpful when I couldn’t decide on what to order. The hosts were amazing and very accommodating. I could not recommend this place enough to people especially tourists. Thank you Mj’s we will be back next year for vacation.
This was a fun little restaurant! It is pretty small, so expect to wait if you come at a typical meal time. It is bustling which is a very good sign. We went twice in the week that we were in New Bern—it was highly recommended by locals, and we were impressed after the first visit! Atmosphere is rumbling without being overwhelmingly loud. Wait staff is friendly, accommodating, fast, and full of recommendations. Now for the *food* reviews! Fried calamari: a great amount of food for the $14 price tag. Crispy, breaded in-house, and very tender. It was not gummy, chewy, or tough. Presentation was great, and sauce marinara and a side of sweet chili from the waiter being so used to people requesting it was plentiful and delicious. Highly recommend! We bought it on both visits and enjoyed it both times. Clam chowder: excellent! Portion is not very good for the price about a cup for $8, but the recipe is apparently an old artifact of the owners of the cafe. It is certainly NE clam chowder which is quite hard to disappoint. Delicious, creamy goodness. I recommend you get it if you like clam chowder and don’t mind the upcharge for what I can only imagine are fresh clams. Crab cakes: ah, the famous crab cakes! Apparently the best in New Bern! They were okay; o quite enjoyed the taste and the warmth. The cake pulls a parent into stringy crabby goodness, and it isn’t bland or cooked poorly. Unfortunately… for $16, a thin small puck of crab cake is a little harder to enjoy. Can’t say I recommend this purchase. It’s just very pricy for what you get. Yummy, for sure! But very pricy. Perhaps they locally source their crab meat, and also crab is expensive in general, but it is a bit nuts to charge so much for a thin crab cake and a small sauce container. Seafood pot pie: excellent taste! Now… it is small for its $20 price tag. The seafood is tender and the crust is yummy. Nice creamy center, pretty spread of typical pie veggies, and a delightful spread of scallop, shrimp, and… squid? Hard to say. This kind of thing is a novelty, and it was fun to try, but it is indeed a pot pie at the end of the day. Personally, I walked out of that experience liking chicken pot pie just as much, especially since it is a fraction of a price haha. Can’t say o recommend this, but I don’t think you’ll regret the taste if you don’t mind the price. A burger: okay, this was surprisingly wonderful! For being a seafood cafe, we really enjoyed the slightly pink, thick burger patty, the potato fries, and the sauce. Great spread of veggies on the burger, and the bun was delightful. Gotta say I *do* recommend this one if you want a filling, delicious, straightforward dish at a good price $9, I think?. TL;DR Several items on the menu seem to be over-priced for what you get. If you don’t mind that, you’ll be especially pleased because the food does taste yummy! Delicious, and we don’t regret trying it! Would come back if we’re in town.
Food was amazing summer the waitress was probably the best waitress I have ever met. Clam chowder is a must have! I can tell they really care about their customers will go again when im in town.Food: 5/5
All of the food was delicious and the portions were good. Rave reviews for the crab dip and crab cake, oysters Rockefeller, shrimp salad, and fried grouper.Food: 5/5
Excellent food & service. Small spot with lots of fresh options, friendly staff & great food.Food: 5/5
Definitely a gem in downtown New Bern! The house vinegarette dressing was slightly sweet and awesome, and my shrimp and grits were divine. The seat cushions need some TLC, but they are an after-thought based on the wonderful food and service.Food: 5/5
