Story

“I first chose the medium of fused glass as a means to become self-employed. Before ever considering myself an ‘artist’, I simply wanted to be an entrepreneur. Over the last few years, I have experimented with glass. With the mentorship of Randall Baird during the last year and a half, I have absorbed the knowledge he has acquired over his 10 years working with glass. Together, we developed a new approach to fused glass. I became passionately curious about glass, which is the reason I continue to love what I do.

My designs range from nature to the completely abstract. I believe that working with natural designs has heightened my attention to detail and allowed me to bring that detail into my abstract pieces as well. Currently, I produce a wide array of glass pieces, however, I am transitioning my work toward larger, architectural pieces and furniture limited only by my current kiln size.

Powdered glass (frit) has been around for a while as well as the mesh screens used to sift it over the surface of glass. I simply added a stencil I created from MDF (very thin wood); cut on a scroll saw. I then place the stencil on a clear piece of glass and dust-powdered glass (frit) over the stencil. After I lift the stencil off, I’m left with the design in powder. The tricky part is carefully placing the glass in the kiln for firing without disturbing the glass powder. After that, I heat the kiln up to 1,460 degrees to melt the glass in.
