Monte Verde Elementary School second-grader Matteo Lopez was the winner of the Doodle 4 Google Logo Contest on 20 May 2011 that featured his artistic rendition of "Space Life." Matteo gets a $15,000 college scholarship, a $25,000 technology grant for his school and the honor of having his Doodle on the Google homepage for a day. Congratulations Matteo, we hope that by the time you graduate from college that there are new materials and technologies to close the distances and solve the problems of space travel. It is quite likely that we will still be alone in the known Universe and that 2027 will look a lot like 2011. Everything happens for a reason, but sometimes that reason is not very important nor edifying. I think that's a valuable lesson to learn at any age. I hope that your future includes 3D holographic movies with smell-o-vision and deja-vu memory ticklers and that a new pizza recipe makes the good stuff nutritionally complete and compliant with the RDA guidelines.
