Come check us out at 21 Elk Ave.

Story

Chris and Emily began baking in Crested Butte in the winter of 2010. First selling bread out of the house in a small CSA style operation to friends and neighbors. Mountain Oven was created in March of 2010 with the intention of growing to sell at the summer farmers market. Gathering friends around the tasty cause, they soon formed into the "breadmafia" as locals began calling it. A gang of friends who baked and danced into the night in group effort to produce a reasonably priced highly nutritious product for the town and its people.

Thus began the spread of positive energy.

Now Mountain Oven is an establish bakery that sells a variety of products to health food stores and restaurants in the Gunnison Valley.
Our home location is our new bakery cafe located at 21 Elk Ave in Crested Butte, open for business with bread, baked goods, breakfast and lunch, and coffee through our partners First Ascent Coffee Roasters.

We stone-grind our own whole-grain flours and use natural leaveners (sourdough culture) for optimal nutrition and flavor. Our bread is hand-shaped, canvas proofed, baked on stones, and made with creativity & love.

All of our ingredients are organic. Whenever possible, we source from local producers.

Wholesome food is nourishing to both body and spirit – feed your soul!

Located in the Guild Cafe, which is shared between the bakery and First Ascent Coffee Roasters. We were there for breakfast on the upstairs deck in summer. The cold brew coffee was great. Breakfast burrito was a mix of eggs, sausage, quinoa, and a few vegetables in a toasted flour tortillas. The bread pudding was a great riff on French toast. Both were very good. Recommended!

The vibe was good. The new male employee at counter very nice. Was told that refills were free but when I went up a snotty girl said there was a charge. I tried to explain we were told otherwise but she kept saying $1.00. It's not that much but it's principle. The food was good but it seemed that everything had a sour taste even the coffee? Probably won't come back.

Very disappointing experience. McGill's was packed with many waiting for tables, so we walked to the end of Elk (former site of Secret Stash) to give this place a try. Guy at the register was spaced out; had to repeat everything to him twice. Baked goods were pricey, but so are a lot of quality baked goods in CB. The problem was the quality of the baking and the taste. A $4 almond "croissant" was tiny. I could see that of course but figured it must be very special in some way. I was wrong. It was not flaky, but dense, cookie dough-like. Overly sweet, little filling and no identifiable almond taste. Honestly, the baked goods at chains like Au Bon Pain or Le Madeleine put this place to shame. Chocolate chip cookie for $1.75, ( think) was okay, but again something was off with the taste and texture. We also tried the breakfast bread pudding, which was pretty good, garnished with red and green apple slices, but the sausage side order was like rubber. We were lucky to find a table. Place was fully occupied by locals on their computers. Oh and the toilet was stopped up.

My fiancee and I custom-ordered a 6-inch double layer, gluten free cake and 30 vanilla/chocolate cupcakes for a wedding ceremony. The Mountain Oven Organic Bakery was very accommodating and was glad to help with this order that was only made a week ahead of time. Additionally,, during our honeymoon, my wife and I ate breakfast at the Bakery. The whole wheat sourdough pancakes and apple-cinnamon porridge were very good. When I visit Crested Butte again in the future, I will definitely be eating breakfast here again. Overall, very positive experience.
