Recently I bought a package of organic mung beans they had prominently displayed on sale near the entrance. I got them home and tried to sprout them for a few days, but none would sprout, which means they were dead beans, not living. If they were simply old crop beans, then some of them still would have sprouted. I’m guessing they were irradiated and therefore no longer viable and not actually organic. I took the open package back and Ramana, the man I talked to, gave me a very difficult time when I asked to get refunded or get store credit for the package. His manner was pretty uncaring. I kid you not, he seriously suggested that I take my complaint up with the company in India that packaged the beans! Finally after a long debate with him about the basic standard of customer service in Silicon Valley grocery stores which almost all stand behind the products they sell, he finally changed his story and agreed to a refund. We walked over to the cash register, and when it turned out I didn’t have the receipt with me, he again refused to help. He wouldn't even give me store credit. Instead he printed a sample receipt, which states their refund policy, which you’d think would be a week or more, but it is only ONE DAY! Since I bought the beans the week before and tried sprouting for five days, it seems that even if I do find the receipt I’m out of luck since it’s long past their one day deadline. The store itself is pretty spacious for a specialty grocery store, but it seems a little understocked given the size of the space. There are a lot of bare spaces. Every time I've visited this store the past couple years since they opened in 2012, it has maybe one or two other customers while I was there. I've never seen it busy. Not a good sign. The produce does not have any prices at all! Bizarre. I have no idea why, but I can only speculate that they give different prices depending on your negotiating skills, similar to grocery stores in India I've visited. When you ask about produce prices, it takes a while to find out how much things cost. The rest of the packaged food is pretty well marked with prices, but not as carefully as most grocery stores. The store has had a big ripped awning out front for some time, so not only do they not care about the customers, they don’t even seem to care about how their business appears compared to the competition. Anyway, I probably won’t be going back there again after this, but wanted to warn others who might want to go there to be careful, things are not what they seem when labeled “organic,” and the store manager can be pretty difficult if you experience a customer service issue.
