Incredible and unforgettable experience with Master Falconer Nancy Cowan at the New Hampshire School of Falconry! My dad age 85 was able to realize a dream with the help of Nancy Cowan at her amazing School. Do you want a Disney World fake experience, or do you really want to learn? This introduction to Falconry is the real deal. Don’t take for granted the work and training that goes into “Manning” these birds to the point that they will tolerate a student who knows virtually nothing to start with but progresses to the point of flying these beautiful birds! Nancy is an amazing teacher! Having read her book “Peregrine Spring”, I was absolutely star struck to be able to meet and work with her! Read the book first and you will get a glimpse of the passion for what she does, and understand the experience that she brings to the table. What a privilege and a joy to see my 85 year old Dad actually working with this beautiful Harris’s Hawk under Nancy’s tutelage. We cannot wait to go for Round 2. Thank you New Hampshire School of Falconry!!!
I have visited NH School of Falconry on several occasions, as a student, photographer and grandmother of a student. Nancy is not only an expert on raptors and all things falconry but an amazing human being. She relays her knowledge in such a way that old and young alike are fascinated. If you are looking for a lifetime experience that will leave a long lasting impression go see Nancy Cowen. You will not regret that you did.
My wife, daughters and myself had a great morning at the school learning about all the birds, their history and the sport of falconry. Nancy was very nice and knowledable. I would encourage anyone interested in falconry to give it a shot. There are a variety of lesson types from those just looking to learn something new, to someone who would like to hunt with the birds and their dogs.
New Hampshire Falconry School was an amazing experience. We were met with a warm smile getting out of the car. The experience was amazing, and she taught us of history about falconry. We learned so much and had so much fun, this was an unforgettable time.THANK YOU NACY
I highly recommend Nancy and her school, It was absolutely one of the best experiences of my life. I will be going back soon for another class. She is an excellent teacher and wonderful person..funny, knowledgeable, and very kind. This was an amazing opportunity to get up close with magnificent birds of prey. I was able to witness first hand just how well her birds are loved and cared for to insure their survival and well being..that is priceless and there need to be more Nancy and Jim's in the world. I honestly was just honored to be able to learn so much from her many years of experience and her great stories. The interaction with her raptors was so spiritual and left me with this overall feeling of peace and joy. Nancy, thank you again for the amazing work you do and for having a place for people to go for this life changing opportunity of being in a raptors world for a beautiful moment in time. This is why Nancy has such a loyal following and is so well respected. Also why kids and adults alike have such an amazing time with her and her raptors. I am still on cloud 9 since my visit Sunday for my birthday, and I cant wait to go back for the Walk in the Woods with a hawk.
Just go! If you enjoy nature and would like to get up close and personal with raptors with a knowledgeable falconer and gracious host, then just go. I have accompanied my wife here on multiple occasions and have had wondrous experiences. Nancy is awesome and her book is too and the birds are both majestic and awe inspiring.
Visited the school for lecture and hawk walk about two months ago. Fell in love with Nancy and her birds. She gave a very thorough talk about the birds of prey and her life time stories with them, her babies. During the walk, she guides you where to stand and how to hold the glove and food so the bird flies right to your glove. Time passed so slowly counting down the days before the second visit. Last time was a walk with Spike and this time Ember! During the first time, it was trying to see if Spike would fly to the glove with food on top. The second time, it was more relaxed and paid more attention to Amber's beauty whatever she's doing, her bossiness, her little songs, and chirps of happiness. My soul was there where Ember chose to perch on the branches or on the ground. When she flew to the glove, one could feel her getting closer in a flash. Also love reading Nancy's book Peregrine Spring. It is pretty worn from bringing it everywhere in my backpack. My heart is with her in her stories of her life with birds of prey. If you love birds and would like to be closer with birds of prey, here is one of the best places to come. Best wishes to all who's planning to come or re-visit!
Keeping alive an ancient art and a thousands-year-old legacy shared by us all, Master Falconer Nancy Cowan shared her 50 years of experience, and a few good stories, to introduce us to these still wild, but trusting magnificent predators. Learning how to cooperate with and direct their instincts to hunt was a beautiful experience -- but never far from view was the fact that these are lethal animals and not exactly pets. Nancy made this point directly to us in her demonstrations and in directing our behaviors as much for our own safety in handling the birds, but as well for the safety and protection of the animals themselves -- a raptor can be "ruined" by mistakes in handling. Our first experience simply holding a Peregrine Falcon was both thrilling and eye-opening. One does not so much pick the bird up as enticing it to a higher perch -- which the bird will choose! Flying Scooter, a hawk, a little later on was equally exciting and enchanting, and an experience which had its own behavioral protocols. We learned as much about ourselves in these exchanges as we do about the animals. Altogether, it was easily one of the most interesting and delightful experiences I've had. To be that close to a wild apex predator, learning to trust it and to have it trust you, was magnificent. I fully expect I'll be back for more.
There is no doubt that Nancy knows her stuff, but she clearly doesn't know the first thing about how to deal with people. She screamed at my daughter for not doing something right the first time she held the falcon and after that, it went down hill. She continued to scream at her throughout the experience, which left my daughter so scared that she could not enjoy the experience. My heart broke for her. It was her graduation present. What a total disappointment and waste of money.
My shy, anxious, 8 year old son is absolutely smitten with Nancy due to her direct communication, honest feedback and in-the-moment corrections. We have been back 3 times and it is 1.5 hours away from us and he asks weekly when we can return again! For a child like him, I believe he is exhausted by today’s adults who don’t mean what they say and don’t say what they mean- Nancy cuts to the point with feedback and then supports and cheers when he achieves a goal. At one point, he wanted to quit and she sat him down and had a heart to heart about not quitting or doing something half-heartedly just because you aren’t good at it the first time. This was a “growing up moment” for him, and even though my parental instinct was to step in and shield him from her feedback, he absolutely adored it! He is full of pride and has a wonderful connection to Nancy! I am a teacher and a school principal and it is rare to have an adult make such a strong connection with these “unreachable” kiddos... and I’m so grateful for Nancy being an absolute gem for my son!
