Amazing building with great history. Definitely recommend you take the free guided tour. It’s very informative and you are free to walk around after the tour. The architecture is spectacular with modern day renovations and originally finished sections. Well worth a visit if you have the time.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Architecturally stunning building, I was stunned by the intricate and towering staircases that are housed within. Building is steeped with history and lovingly adorned. Looks like something out of Harry Potter rather than the seat of government for New York. Well worth the visit.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
This building is absolutely gorgeous and I'm so appreciative of the State of New York for allowing visitors! We thoroughly enjoyed the guided tour by Elizabeth! She was extremely informative and beautifully animated! I highly recommend one of their free guided tours that takes about an hour!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
The more than beautiful Capitol is really worth a visit! And above all it's free. Just a short security check and you are free to stroll around. There are also guided tours, but we wen by our own with a map we got at the information desk. Don't miss this! The stuff and everyone we met inside was very friendly. Great place to visit!
We had the opportunity/honor to visit the New York State Capitol in JUN_FY2024 and it was an amazing experience, a great opportunity to learn more about NY's history and legacy. We did a plant tour aroud since it was closed during the weekend, and for sure it's a remarkable building. Definitely, it's a place that deserves my respect. It was a privilege.
Amazing experience of a 10am tour. The local government is doing such a good job to maintain this place and give free tours. Deserve to go!

The New York State Capitol is one of the most elaborately constructed buildings in Albany, NY, and the focal point of the state’s government. Taking 32 years to build and the work of 5 architects, including renowned designers Leopold Eidlitz and Henry Hobson Richardson, the NYS Capitols intricate architectural styles is a unique blend of designs that boldly stands out within Albany’s eclectic cityscape. Fact 1: It is said that Richardson used the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, France as inspiration when designing New York’s capital building. The New York State Capitol building is open to the public and free to visit and explore Monday – Friday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm Fun fact 2: The New York State Capitol is only one of ten State Capitol buildings that doesn’t feature a domed roof. Originally the architectural designs included both a domed roof and a tower, However, the building became too heavy during construction and started sliding towards State Street. The Exterior Staircase was created to shift the weight of the building back into place. Fact 3: When construction was halted in 1899, the building costs totaled $25 million. Four New York State Governors became President of the United States. it is said to be the most beautiful state capitol in the country. Parking: street parking is available adjacent to the capital building, on both State Street and Washington Avenue.
Awesome building and the free tour was well worth it. Building is quite impressive with the architecture and history of the design. You can walk around at your leisure and take pictures as there are informational signs around you can read for the history but I recommend the free tour they offer as the guide was very knowledgeable and easy to understand. She also made sure to point out highlights that I probably would have missed since there is so much to take in on your own.
If you like architecture and historical sites, you will love visiting the Capitol building. They offer tours which are really cool. The building has lots of impressive stone work, tile work, ceiling murals, wood work, etc. The whole building is really ornate and beautiful. Grand chandeliers, fancy elevators. There's something interesting everywhere you look. Really incredible place to visit, highly recommend!!!
