Story

At Newtown Friends School, we believe that the best education is one that engages children in their own learning. Combining an innovative and challenging academic program, a welcoming and nurturing community, and a strong culture of Quaker values, NFS provides a supportive and dynamic student-centered environment that fosters independent and creative thinkers. Here children acquire not only the skills needed to achieve long-term academic success, but also the confidence and enthusiasm to keep learning, growing, thinking, expressing themselves, imagining, caring, creating, exploring, and making a difference in the world.

Founded in 1948 by Newtown Friends Meeting and still under its care, NFS is an independent institution guided by the core values of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). The Friends’ belief that “there is that of God in everyone” leads to key aspects of a Newtown Friends education, both followed and taught: the creative and nonviolent resolution of conflict, the prevalence of silence as a means to listen for an inner truth, and the fostering of respect, concern, and responsibility for the well-being of self and others.

Mission

Newtown Friends School provides a dynamic education through which students learn to think critically, collaborate peacefully, communicate effectively, and lead with character and compassion. Rooted in Quaker values, the rigorous education at Newtown Friends School instills the confidence and conviction to succeed in a changing world.
