About

On South Dakota State University’s Hobo Day Nov. 2, 1929, Harold and Gladys Nikalson fired up a little stove burning what was then known as “white gas” and started turning out what became the most famous, enduring hamburger ever in Brookings!

Just what you'd expect from a 1950's hamburger joint. Great burgers, shakes and malts. Fast, casual, and friendly. Great spot for a quick lunch.

Nothing special about this place. Had to wait almost 30 minutes, not enough indoor seating so we had to sit outside which wouldn't have mattered except it was cold and we had a baby and when we got our hamburgers we were left wondering why we just spent $60 on hamburgers. McDonald's or Burger King would have been a better value. All we ordered was hamburgers, cheeseburgers, pop and chips... Maybe they have pies to die for or something but the sliders aren't worth the money/time.

Love the food and setting if you are not in a hurry. Seven people working. Most walking around. Not many people just before noon rush. Only one on grill and one on toppings. Neither are in any rush.

Small burgers with small taste at a cheap price. Not sure how they are "the best burgers in South Dakota".
