Honest assessment of my vehicle's issues but no fix. 5 stars for honesty and availability on a Saturday in Mammoth Lakes, saved me from being stranded.

The guy that runs this place is not customer friendly. I needed a flat repair and it took him a half hour to look at it and then said it was not fixable and wanted to sell me a tire. He knew he was the only shop open in town. Avoid this business.

I spent Memorial Day weekend in Mammoth, and on my drive from Berkeley the front of my car started making sputtering/ticking sounds. I replaced my engine last year and was afraid the problem was related, so stopped at a small shop in Lee Vining. They showed me the problem, a small tube in the front of the car that is part of the exhaust system and said it was loose and would need to be tightened (I later found out it was called the air injection tube). My car was very hot, so they said I'd have to sit for an hour before they could do it and if I was heading to mammoth to get it taken care of there. They called the problem an exhaust system leak. I took my car in to norco Saturday with the expectation that they would get to it Monday morning. They got to it after lunch Monday and they charged me 35 dollars to tell me that the shields over the exhaust leak were rusted and they might have to break them and it might take a long time, so I should take it to a Subaru dealer so they didn't waste my money if the parts broke taking them off. They said it was safe to drive back to Berkeley and to do it there. I took my car to a muffler shop today on the recommendation of a Subaru dealer and they were very confused with the description I gave them from norco. They said they didn't hear a leak, so inquired further. I showed him where the pipe was the the original shop had shown me and he tightened it in a few minutes and didn't charge me. Perhaps the folks at norco were busy and didn't take the time to really identify the problem and were looking in the wrong place, but there were no rusted shields over the front pipe that was loose - and they absolutely should have more carefully actually found the problem, rather than charging me for not actually identifying it and sending me elsewhere.

These guys were the most helpful mechanics I've ever met. They went well out of their way to diagnose the tricky problems with my vehicle (the previous mechanics had put the wrong ECU in rather than fix the real problem- a wiring issue). They provided great customer service and got me back on the road, which neither of the two other shops I had taken it to for the same problem were able to do. They charged me less to fix the problem than the Chevy dealership did to fix nothing! I can't recommend them enough!
