Prepare for the worst, especially if you don't have an appointment. Show up at 7:30 AM if you can. Prepare to stand in line outside for about 2 1/2 hours. And then perhaps wait inside for another four hours or so. Bring lunch. Bring a book. Make sure your phone is at 100%. And maybe do like I did and sneak out for some tacos on Telegraph Avenue, because you will certainly have the time. The workers there blamed my (and many others') 5 1/2 hour wait time the "new system." I honestly did not think it could be as bad as it was. Good luck.

This place ought to be ashamed to be called a government business. I would give it negative stars if I could! I showed up when they opened and there were at least 80 people OUT OF THE DOOR waiting in line! I thought it must be a mistake, but no, it was for real! A gentleman told me I need to show up at 6:30am to WAIT IN LINE for them to open in order to get a number. He also said I could make an appointment, but they're booked out for 3 months! This is the sorriest excuse of a public service office I have ever seen! I went to Berkeley Smog test and it took 15 minutes to do everything, and that was only because the DMV server was down. I feel sorry for people who don't know about these private places. Oakland DMV is the WORST. PLACE. EVER.

To be honest, I did not have an appointment. I did arrive early at 6:30a and didn’t get a number until 10:50a. The system shut down at 1p and I waited until 4:30p before leaving. I was never seen. I arrived the next day and got my number around 9:50a this time. Again, system shut down at 11a and came back online 20 minutes later. After waiting until 2:30p I went to the desk to where I was in the queue the clerk told me they had already called my number and I was to be cycled back into the queue. I stayed until they closed at 5p and was finally served at 5:30p. It’s also important to mention when a number AN058 similar to mine (AM058) was called I went to the window and told them I think that’s my number. It turned out they enter my number incorrectly. I can’t get my car out of tow-storage until I get help.

At least there is a numbering system and the check in line moves relatively quick. Arrived at 7:30am, DMV opened at 9:00am. Checked through and got my number at 10:00am. Still waiting for my number to be called at Noon but I'm happy that I haven't been standing in line this whole time. The number system helps. Next upgrade to the number system could be a text number you could queue in your phone that would send you alerts when your number is close to being called. Coffee would do wonders for the wait though, if I had known I'd still be waiting two hours later, I would have left to get coffee and came back.

Very inefficient process, line , numbering system, everything. Hire some smart mathematicians and programmers and try something different. Let’s upgrade to modern technology. Give 10 DMV workers iPads and have them walk through the crazy long line and check visitors in remotely using iPad. Send visitors their number via text message or have visitors download an app, which will allow them to receive a number in the queue through the app. If visitors don’t have a mobile phone, then have a line worker print a number on the spot using a mobile print machine - the same type the parking meter people use. Have a screen/monitor outside that shows which has been called. Place plastic chairs outside so people can sit and wait for their number to be shown on the screen. Not very hard...just takes someone doing it at DMV.
