I went to this school from 1999 to 2003 and I can only hope things have improved since my graduation. The school was falling apart back then and had various issues such as asbestos. Even worse, the overall environment was not conducive to learning and there was not an atmosphere of caring or respect amongst classmates and, at times, even teachers. Children were exceptionally cruel to each other and rarely held accountable for their actions. Bullying at this school was rampant and sadly, not enough done to combat it. While the English department was strong, the math department was filled with indifferent teachers who did not make enough of an effort to identify and help struggling children. Working at a top ranking IB school in a foreign country has allowed me to see the many flaws in this school more clearly. Here, the teachers will do everything they can to reach out to kids who are having a tough time. At LOLHS, teachers rarely took it upon themselves to seek out the children who most need help, academically, socially or emotionally. I do not feel like the school did enough to foster an accepting environment or teach young, emotionally and socially competent individuals who were accepting to everyone. I am giving this school 2 stars for the few friends I made and with the assumption that things have improved since I left.

This is truly a unique High School where my two sons have and continue to receive an excellent public education. Because of it's location, LOLHS can offer students many of the benefits normally only afforded to private school students. For example, because of the proximity of Rogers Lake, Old Lyme Rowing Association and the Blood Street Sculls Club, students have the ability to compete with (and on many occasions beat!) some of the most elite boarding schools in the country (2x National Scholastic Champions Girls and Boys V1 and V2, Silver National Junior Championships V1). They offer a wide range of sports for boys and girls from X-Country and Fencing to Lacrosse and Soccer and the Wildcats regularly produce the highest number of Scholar:Athletes in the Connecticut Shoreline Conference (24 in 2015-2016). Other's will add all of the amazing sports results that this tiny school produces. LOLHS's FIRST Robotics program - The TechnoTicks are a Hall of Fame team, one of the best in the country and the world and both of my sons have benefited from the incredible leadership and personal mentoring that they have received from being part of the program. The school has an amazing music and choral program - they are the school that has been chosen to represent Connecticut at the Pearl Harbor 75th Anniversary Celebrations in Hawaii in December 2016. Just take a look at where the classes of 2013 - 2016 took up University places and compare those to others: Brown (Music), Cornell (Engineering and Biology), Harvard (Physics & undeclared), MIT (Mechanical & Electrical Engineering) Princeton, Yale (Mechanical Engineering & undeclared), Stanford, Bowdoin, Bates, Colby. But importantly, this school is not just about getting it's students into prestigious Colleges. It looks at every single student individually and helps them find the best possible place for their aspirations and their abilities whether that is a gap year, a service career, a vocational career, a four year college or a research university. The School Counselors have always been happy to work with me to help my children come up with the best opportunities they can. I cannot recommend it enough!
