The complex is huge. My husband and I went on a Sunday morning at 9 am. We were the only ones there, which was really cool. As we explored the complex there is a couple of spots in the men's dorm area where we heard a loud bang at the other end of the walk. We walked to where the noise came from and didn't see anyone. We looked down and there was a blood strain on the floor. Also, it was very cold in there, which gave us a sense of the temperature the inmates had to live in. The women's and Max security was the creepiest area, I had a fight or flight feeling. Then the tunnel had gun ports that the officers could shoot out of, when you look through we could see the old classroom. And the mess hall was very cramped. We went down to the hole, which is the picture with a small round grate, and we both closed the door in on of the cells. It was so dark and cold and eerie. Last, we went to the theater where they had the gallow, where they hung people. Also the shoes you see in the picture were made of concrete and not soles, for the prisoners they thought would try to run an escape. If you like creepy and history all in one I recommend this place. I was also told by one of the workers that it's better to go in the summer cuz more things are open, they were renovating a couple of spots we couldn't get into. $15 per person, and your receipt to get back in for free is good to up to a year. Then, we went to car museum.... You'll have to go to see it. I'm not going to spoil that. 😀

Excellent history & educational facility! It’s interesting, fascinating, creepy, amazing. The auto museum is a MUST SEE, however it’s too cramped. There are many cars that aren’t properly displayed. It would be nice to walk around & observe the cars. The prison is nothing short of incredible. But give yourself 2+ hours for a full self-guided tour.

Awesome experience as far as the museum goes. However, I wish the staff wasn't so rude. Especially Lisa, who apparently thought we were wasting her time. But it's still worth seeing in my opinion.

I stop by on my way to Butte every time. I love the odd combination of prison museum and car museum. The staff is always very kind and courteous. I love taking people here for their first time

Without question this is the creepiest place I've ever visited, and I've traveled around the world. I knew nothing of the site's history before visiting. While here I and the person I was with had very high anxiety, as though we weren't safe. Interesting place to visit, but definitely not for kids. This is no Alcatraz.
