As with any university, it is what you make of the experience. It is a christian school so you do pledge to follow strict rules that are in line with the Nazarene faith. When I attended, I felt as though the majority of students had been home school. They were very out of touch with reality. Not bad people but did require patience and understanding. Loved my professors and the education I received. I was one of the many caught breaking rules and should have been expelled my senior year but the administration did their best to help me and allowed me to graduate. One of these reviews indicated that you had to be upper middle class to attend. That is not true. You simply have to take the time to apply for the many scholarships available, maintain good grades, and work.

Great school with professors that actually care about you as a person. Small class sizes means professors know who you are. Sometimes it does feel that the religious aspects are made more important than the education side. Administration seems to spend the money on "pretty" things rather than upgrading dorms/apartments and classrooms.

There's so much that I could say but I will leave it at this is an unrealistic place, the rules/policies are extreme, (the young adults are treated like children) (see the student handbook online). Not diversified yet they are recruiting minorities for sports. Felt like I was in the movie "Get Out" when I visited and urged my child to seriously consider attending as the culture that I could see was not a good fit for his personality. Chapel is required 3 times a week with assigned seating to ensure that you attend. My son felt like he was in prison. He could also feel the racial tension that existed within the football team. He lasted a week. It was a total waste of our money and time and almost ruined my child's perception of a good college experience. If you are looking for a predominantly white, holier than God environment for your child then this is the place for you! They have a culture/perception to uphold and it shows. I was also pulled over for failure to have tail lights on (in a rental car, as I am from CA, I didn't realize they weren't on) Do you think I was allowed to go after realizing the mistake? No! My son and friends were then pulled over also days later for failure to signal. They sent out 3 cop cars for the boys. So, the community is a piece of work as well, if you are a minority you should seriously consider this place! It's not a very welcoming town!

Olivet is a wonderful, safe environment to grow and learn as a young christian adult. If people aren't interested in adopting the rules of the University - rules that are fairly normal in most christian homes - then I'm afraid Olivet is not for you. I think we should all recognize that it's not for everyone and that's okay - it doesn't make it bad. There are a lot of happy graduates that will argue that claim. Chapel is only two days a week, not three as one other reviewer mentioned and yes there are assigned seats because it's important that the students attend. The basis of a CHRISTIAN University is spending time in the word. I guarantee other christian universities do the same. Chapel speakers aren't boring either - I can't think off the top of my head right now but Ben Zobrist jumps out at me as one of my favorites. As far as being racially biased, my daughter is not white yet treated as an equal by her peers and loved by her professors. She absolutely loves every minute she spends here.
