Story

The Washington Park & Zoo Railway is a narrow gauge recreational railroad in Portland, Oregon's Washington Park with rolling stock built to 5/8 scale. Opened in three stages in 1958, 1959 and 1960, it provides transportation between the Oregon Zoo, Hoyt Arboretum, International Rose Test Garden, and the World Forestry Center. The extended line is about 2mi long. There is also a 1mi loop within the zoo grounds. The railway carries about 350,000 passengers per year. The railroad is operational year-round, but the extended line is used only on weekends in the spring and daily only in summer months. Special events occur during the Christmas holidays. As of 2012, the price of a ticket was up to $5.00 for the full line, $3.50 for the short "Zoo Loop", but zoo admission was also required.Zoo officials announced in September 2013 that the line would be closed for about one year for construction, with the last day of service scheduled to be September 22. The temporary closure was necessitated by the construction of the zoo's new Elephant Lands exhibit, which will also include remodeling of other parts of the zoo grounds. The short-loop route through the southwest part of the zoo grounds was scheduled to be removed permanently, and during the one-year suspension of service a new section of track was to be laid to create a replacement for the short loop. Train operations returned running on the new Zoo Loop line as of November 22, 2014.

Nice Zoo. Big enough to keep the kids busy for the whole day. Many animals to check. The left side called “Welcome to the Northwest” is just awesome. The shops, restaurants, fast food are nice and affordable. There is a train you can take with your kids but for an additional fee. I’d recommend this place during sunny days. By the way they close at 4pm during 6 months of the year

I've been to plenty of zoos and so far this one was the most beautiful and well maintained. The animals had large, clean enclosures, but they were still easy to spot and watch from a distance. Animals were also extremely active and eager to explore. There was a lot of great information about each animal as well. The staff were friendly and happy to explain specific animals and very helpful. The entire zoo is green with plenty of shade, food, and things to buy. The Oregon Zoo is a great place to take children. Overall a wonderful place to explore!

I've been to a good number of zoos and this one is by far the most visually appealing yet. It's clean, well laid out, the enclosures are all good sized for the animals and also provide plenty of "natural" aspects for the animals to live like they would in the wild as well as coverage from the elements if needed. The staff was professional and generally pleasant to be around and had no issues answering any questions we may have had.

Large variety of animals spread in huge area. The zoo is maintained very properly and animals are taken care of very well. The artificial habitat created for animals looks quite natural. It is educational and entertaining for kids and adults. One can have a nice walk in the zoo.The elephants are trained to do some activities which is enjoyable. The zoo lights in winter looks very glamorous, the light decoration makes the park look beautiful. Must visit during the light festival.

One of the best zoos I have ever visited! I visited with my seven year old on a chilly and wet day in February, and he had the best time. His favourite exhibits were the otters (the smallest otter was very active and vocal! He was making the sweetest sounds - totally mesmerizing!), the incredible underwater viewing area for the seals (who were also very active), and the elephants, who were out and being very playful, throwing branches on their heads and "wearing" them. We had a sad but necessary learning moment in the Predator section when we saw the torn up body of a whole goat lying at the front of the wild dog exhibit. That was a little unexpected but such is nature. I loved the mongoose exhibit. My most favourite zoo exhibit ever was always the prairie dog exhibit at the Detroit Zoo, but being able to get up that close with the very cute little mongoose (mongeese?!) made me so happy. The gift shop was as I expected - a lot of over priced stuff that nobody really needs. My kid collects pencils and was able to purchase a 3 pack for $3. And outside the gift shop there are some penny pressing machines, so if you're on a budget, a few quarters and some pennies (51 cents each) can get you some really neat souvenirs. Overall, I highly recommend this zoo. Entry fee is very reasonable ($9.95, adult. $4.95, child) and parking is $2/hr, so a small family could have a fun day out for a pretty low price.
