I came a few years ago for a friend's wedding and I thought the interior was so very beautiful. It was amazing. Great acoustics, beautiful art. It is the oldest church building in New Orleans, dating from 1826. It was once known as The Mortuary Chapel as all those who had passed from yellow fever, the funerals were held here. Now it has a diverse community it has outreach to. What I was really impressed with was the shrine to St Jude, patron saint to the ill. One unpleasant thing on my most recent visit was two separate people hanging out asking for money for food and drink. I get that there are needy in the area, I would just think that those who run this church and shrine would take better care of them. All in all this is a lovely place to take a seat and reflect on all that is going on in this world and the huge disparity. Also the fact that Catholics are all about the womb and not actual life, which is probably why there are panhandling on the premises.
Jazz mass.... Spiritually uplifting, soul stirring melodically angelic moving mass that had me feeling some type of way. I swear I actually shed tears I was so touched by the service and the sermon on the day that I attended. I am Catholic and this service just hit me in a different way that I have been taught to worship quietly all of my life. It was liberating..don't get me wrong I love the stoic mass that I am used to...I just walked away from this one feeling wrapped up, snuggled, safe. I went to the gift shop, prayed in the grotto, and lit a candle. #loved
My staple church for my entire life so far and my ancestors. St. Jude Thaddeus, Guadalupe of Mary, Blessed Virgin Mary, the community, the staff are all wonderful, blessed. A peaceful beautiful divine home to be ONE with the Creator.
The oldest surviving church in the city, which was originally called the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua. Usually open and not crowded. The church for the police and fire department.
Im very confused and concerned as to why local Known crook and thief Kenneth Michael Plaisance was up on the Altar attempting to sing Gloria This wretched, foul, abomination abuse of power ensnared in flesh has done everything is his power to decimate my family and business To bring him on stage and broadcast said attraction is disgusting, unholy and unclean Is there no BAR to clear before taking the mic? This i choose to not be associated with I have since taken to worship elsewhere
I did not attend this church but I do love the little grotto.
I had quite the Divine experience in this place. Words actually cannot describe what happened to me here.
Take a break from the Quarter and visit this amazingly unique chapel. You won't forget it.
Wonderful mass. As out-of-towners we felt welcomed and the music and homily were top notch.
Nice little Black Catholic parish. I was hoping to visit a few here in NOLA during my last visit, and ended up coming here twice, once during the week and again for the Gospel Jazz Mass on Sunday morning. Both were nice, and it's good to know there's thriving parish communities like this. I especially enjoyed that they sang a Black gospel hymn/spiritual during Communion at the weekday Mass I went to. I'd never heard that before in a Catholic church, but it reminded me very much of my upbringing in a Black church.
