Pammel is one local shop that everyone in Ames should be happy to support. The food is delicious, some of the best halal I've ever had, and it's very reasonably priced. The owner, an ISU alumnus, is an incredibly nice person and the service is great. In addition, this is one of the only places some international students can eat or buy imported groceries. Overall, it's a wonderful shop and I would recommend it to anyone

You must eat here while in Ames. Everything on the menu is absolutely delicious. The service is amazing. They sell all kinds of fruit juices and sodas. I've witnessed the owner sit down with a customer to talk about Christianity and Islam in a very respectful and understanding manner, even though, the customer was being extremely rude. Also, almost every time I've sat down for lunch in the summer, they have passed out free slices of homegrown watermelon or honeydew. Truly an amazing place.

The best ethnic grocery store in Central Iowa. Paired with them owning the Stanhope least locker they have just shoot everything you could possibly need for any middle Asian / Indian food. 
The last is amazing, the staple products are available at low prices, and the spices are the freshest in Central Iowa.
The lunch counter in the back serves up great Indian, Greek and middle eastern food including the best authentic gyros I've had in the entire state of Iowa.

I visit Pammel at least once a week.  You'll enter through the grocery.  It's the best place in town to pick up spices, dried beans, rice, and a wide variety of ethnic goods.   The restaurant is situated in the back and is a must visit!  The hummus, falafel, and baba ganoush are otherworldly.  There are great vegetarian/vegan options, and everything is generous in portion and price.  Grab a seat in the cozy dining area and you'll likely witness the owner interact with some of the regular patrons.  Observe his patient, caring, and helpful demeanor and their enthusiastic faces as they place their order and you'll understand that what makes Pammel so special extends beyond the delicious food.
