I was throughly impressed with the inviting atmosphere and warm familial touch of the food. It was my first meeting with a young Asian American chef, and he suggested we try this new staple to Chinatown. Walking the alleys of Chinatown to arrive at Pearl River Deli, set the stage for the origins, and traditions of the food. Chinatown in itself transports you into another world, so upon entering, the pieces all came together. I was immersed in a modern perspective with traditional origins. From the color choices of the plating, staff, to the decor on the walls, places like these allow a new generation the benefit of new discovery. Without his recommendation I would have never found this place. It’s a testament to explore outside your bounds.
This spot serves authentic Cantonese food in a modernized setting. The menu is I’m so happy that the food here is just as good as all the blogs say it is because now I have a go to place in Chinatown :, Ordered: 1. Hainan chicken 2. Char siu with noodles 4. Lemon chicken 5. Corn cheese bun & bolo bao 6. Marinated cucumbers The hainan chicken was super juicy and the rice was perfectly done. The rice was packed with fragrant flavors as the chicken stock & fat was thoroughly cooked into it. Other highlights were the lemon chicken & char siu. Both meats were so tender & paired with great sauces. The pastries’ textures were not like traditional dim sum breads but still solid. I loved the whole experience and would go back for another weekend brunch. Tips: -hainan chicken is only available to order on the weekends -go to sesame LA the superette next door for small batch local goods -definitely order the lemon chicken this dish surprised me with all good it was Price: $75/meal
I’ve seen this place before on food pages, on social media, and heard good things about the food here…so I thought I’d give it a try! Finding the place here wasn’t too easy for me since the address doesn’t say Hill Street even though that’s where the entrance to it is so after 15 mins I found it. A sign in the front with P.R.D. written and a door tucked away in the back. Finally, the greeting was a little rude but I pay it no attention…on to the food I got the pork chop bun$14 then the char siu with noodles $16 I believe Grabbed a seat and waited patiently for my meal to arrive…then 10 mins later my sandwich came out it looked really good with that bone sticking out the bun First bite was surprising it brought me back to a similar sandwich I would eat when my mom made pork chops…it was so delicious! Juicy, still steaming, tender, creamy from the mayo and onions were a little sweet. Things got a little messy but it didn’t matter because every thing was getting cleaned up even that bone!! Then came the noodles which I don’t want to spend to much time on so here this is… Small portion, pretty bland, not worth it at all. So besides it everything else was just fine
OMG. The LA Times review was no lie... Like being transported back to the 80s as a kid visiting Chinatown with family. Inspired, quality, authentic cooking. An old school experience updated with top notch ingredients and no trendy fluff.
Charming casual spot in Chinatown where you can dine in and enjoy a delicious Macau pork chop bun, char siu, and Hainan chicken weekends only and take away heavenly baked goods. Tasty vegetarian options available. Vegetarian options: mushroom chow fun and vegetarian mapo tofu, among others
A little pricey but Amazing food. Very organic and natural. Traditional yet modern. A little hidden away.Parking spaceDifficult to find parkingParking optionsFree street parking
Currentt entrance is on Hill Street. The Google address of 935 Mei Ling Way is correct but there is currently construction blocking that entrance. No pixs of food as it is all gone! Love the Macau pork chop bun!
Pork chop bun didn’t work for me . The bun couldn’t hold the tasty pork chop which could have been on its own on a pure steamed rice. The bbq pork on noodles was tender & tasty but a broth would be better choice for it. Used to come here before the pandemic, it was no nonsense, good Chinese comfort food. Now it developed into a fusion of some sort which attracts newer younger crowd but sadly, lost the taste & its authenticity for diners like me
Food so delicious with a great menu. Will definitely return. Was easy to find street parking nearby.
Dropped by because a friend mentioned wanting to try their charsiu pork. It was stop two for lunch- and was convinced by the employee to try their weekend special: hainan chicken rice. Have to say it was pretttttty good. Chicken had both white and dark meat, rice was flavorful- a trio of dipping sauces the ginger scallion is my fave always and they made it well- the spicy was also great it wasn’t spicy don’t let the redness deceive you and it was just... good. They’re right next door to Howlin Rays- so they must be new- it used to be a bao place but now they have a small but tasty menu with some rice and noodles and porkchop bun.. will have to try some more next time.
