Story

The Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown, Massachusetts, was built between 1907 and 1910, to commemorate the first landfall of the Pilgrims in 1620, and the signing of the Mayflower Compact in Provincetown Harbor. This 252ft campanile is the tallest all-granite structure in the United States, and is part of the Provincetown Historic District. In 1620, the Pilgrims spent five weeks exploring Cape Cod before they sailed to Plymouth, Massachusetts. After spending weeks at sea, the Pilgrims resolved not to set foot on land until the Mayflower Compact was written and signed. A contest was held to design a structure to commemorate the Pilgrims' landing; the winning design, by Willard T. Sears, was based upon the Torre del Mangia in Siena, Italy, designed by Agostino and Agnolo da Siena in 1309.In a ceremony on August 20, 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt officiated at the laying of the cornerstone. After the monument's completion, President William H. Taft dedicated it at a ceremony held on August 5, 1910.

Beautiful monument worth walking the 160-some steps and ramps to get to the top at 252 feet. Lovely views all around. Take water and stop often! Nice breezes at the top. Museum and gift shop are very nice. Park in the lot all day, with cost going toward one admission.

Walked from the wharf where we had parked...a mile or more to the monument. Pretty walk. But, you can park and get one free ticket in their paid parking lot. 60 or so stair steps and 100+ ramps of walking will get you to the top for spectacular views and lovely breeze. Interesting information about cities in the state on the inside to bolster you as you walk. Little windowed on each floor have a rushing breeze to cool you off as you walk up an otherwise warm inside tower in summer. Totally worth it.

quite the climb to get to the top of this monument. Lovely museum. Very nice, albeit not the fastest staff as far as checking out and in of the gift shop. Very educational stop in Cape Cod if you are interested in American History.

Get a history lesson, some great views and some exercise. I was impressed by how well maintained the site was and by the knowledgeable staff. Would recommend for tourists and travelers!

We had perfect weather for a climb up the monument. The way the steps/ramp is designed makes it relatively easy to get to the top and to come down. A blessing for these 55 year old knees. The view was fantastic. The museum was fun to wander around. Overall, well worth the admission price.
