Beautiful hike to the Pincushion Mountain Trail Outlook. Takes about 2.5 hours all together for a person of average fitness level. I would say it is a moderate level of difficulty due to rocky and steep areas on the trail. Worth the beautiful view.
First time to this trail. Maps at the parking spot seemed a bit convoluted compared to others. There are bike as well as hiking trails, we were hiking. Also had snow shoe and cross country for winter. Trails were good, well maintained. Went maybe almost 2.5 miles in and made it to the overlook. We thought we missed it as there were not much for signs and we assumed it was closer to parking.
Tons of trails here, lots of choices from easy short hikes to long loops or out and backs.I recommend taking the superior hiking trail to the overlook, there are fun boardwalks with plenty of thimbleberry bushes to snack on, and the views from the overlook are amazing.
A fairly easy trail! Give a couple hours for a relaxed hike from the parking lot to the main peak/ lookout area. It is a nice view of the lake with a big open rock area when you get to the top!
Oh my gosh!!! Oh my gosh!!! The beauty of this!! It was a little muddy today. Well worth the hike and nice weather! Wow! The view!!
Pincushion Mountain Trail is a favorite.The Superior Trails system is well maintained and mapped really well. The fall foliage and natural habitat was amazing overlooking Grand Marais, MN.
When someone tells you "it's worth the walk" you have a moment when you wonder if they mean its a really long hard walk and hopefully you'll like it. Then there's the "ITS WORTH THE WALK" where you need to just keep walking because it's totally worth it. Yep it's totally worth it. The walk on your own is about an hour. If your with kids that want to go slow and play, plan on 90 minutes. ; when you get to the point, take off your shoes and feel the earth. It's a great place to nap too. Views no camera can capture.
Worth the hike! The views are spectacular. It's a well establish path, prepared for snowmobiles so excellent for hiking too. It's part of a network of trails and the trail maps can be a little bit confusing. We used AllTrails to make sure we are on the right path.
Nice hike five minutes away from Grand Marais. There was a good mix of easy and hard spots with a final push up to the top of pincushion mountain for spectacular views of the superior national forest on one side and lake superior on the other! Whole hike took us about three hours there and back, but we definitely took some time to relax at the top of the mountain!
A very beautiful place for outdoor activities! Highly recommended!
