About

We exist to love God, love people, and grow disciples of Jesus Christ.

Story

OUR VISION

Real people taking real faith into the real world

OUR CORE VALUES

“The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing”
Above all else, we believe Jesus Christ, his person and his transforming message of love, is the main thing in all of life. Our conviction is that the more we stay focused and connected to him, the more true life we will experience.

“All ages, all growing, all the time”
We believe that discipleship is not something we do in addition to our “regular” lives. As we grow in following Jesus, we will see that he is concerned with how we live all the time, wherever we are. We want to model this kind of life to the next generation.

“It’s OK to no be OK”
We don’t have to get ourselves together before we can experience God in a personal way. We can be real about our imperfection while at the same time, trust that we are loved and on a growth path to a better place.

“Bring Doubts—Pursue Faith”
Real people often have honest doubts. We want to be a place where it is OK to ask questions about faith. Asking the hard questions can be a way for us to grow in our faith while simplistic answers can cause our faith to waver.

At this time, I'm concerned with some of the business practices at Pine Lake. I've visited this church a few times and I've had a few conversations with Mark, the lead pastor. I've gotten to know a few of the members of the church, but the turn off is the gravitation toward ego or Republican principles (if even that) rather than toward the gospel, God like principles. This last weekend, I visited to hear a sermon about women and head coverings and why men were distracted by women and thus needed authority, ie. this explained some of the masculine and feminine expectations of men and women. This conversation then turned into how to approach the transgender issues in our society today by talking about how important it is to align with what the masculine or feminine type looks like, ie. don't start dressing like the opposite gender. While I think the pastor was just talking about expectations he grew up with and what our society expects, it doesn't speak to the very real realities of what some of these groups deal with as far as the identity and gender confusion that exists, ie. it's not just about dressing like a gender. When I heard in a church that the topic of women and equality is a topic that's not going away, I was concerned that it actually took this long for a church to recognize this since 20 years ago, there was better equality goals in the midwest than there seems to be in the christian church in the eastside of Seattle today. What personally concerned me at this level was that the lead pastor acknowledged having Christian feminist teachers (and I would likely be one of his teachers at this point), but he uses someone else's material to teach without paying that person. After careful observation, this church is trying to be like other churches in town like Timberlake and Eastridge, both of which have cult-like behaviors. This church is using other churches ideas so much so that you can almost hear the pastors of other churches speak through their work and business practices, ie. Pine Lake belongs to someone else not to Pine Lake. It's losing its authenticity and is becoming spiritually influenced by people and churches that are not good for them and it's lending toward competition. A sermon can have some good moments, but it stays stuck in Republican ideals that are not gospel ideals, such as discrimination or older patriarchy viewpoints. Each time, I think it's on the verge of change, it resists the change, trying to hang on to what is old and what is not truly gospel but upbringing or traditions. I found it personally concerning that my ideas as a biblical teacher are being accepted by the pastor, but that I am not acknowledged or paid for using them, but he is. It is a very awkward feeling, and far too many women are experiencing this today and not being paid for their hard work. I see this theme quite often in the christian churches around here lately, ie. stealing. In this particular church, it is creating a place of being stuck because it won't break the shell and be original, or break the shell of slavery to another church in town in using someone else's ideas. Or elders are holding the church rigid leading to territorial and power issues. It is preventing a good Holy Spirit surrendering feel. It's not natural, and it's making it hard for newcomers to break through with new, more welcoming, more embracing ideas that need to take hold. I don't leave church thinking I've learned something new, I leave church wondering why this is still going on in 2017. I believe Mark is opening the door to the work to get there, but they have to break away from bad influences and really dig into purpose (and pay the people who are helping them get there). I've met some truly gracious people at Pine Lake, however, and I hope I can leave a higher review in the near future.

Pine Lake Covenant has been my church home for seven years. It is a body of believers and seekers of all ages seeking God and sharing the journey of life together. I have found sound Biblical teaching, wise mentoring, and compassionate encouragement.
