Story

The Prairie Homestead is a sod house located at 21070 South Dakota Highway 240 north of Interior, South Dakota. The house was constructed by Ed Brown and his wife in 1909. The Browns built their home with sod bricks and topped it with a grass roof. Western South Dakota was one of the last regions of the state to be settled by homesteaders, and the house is now one of the few remaining sod homes in the state. The home is now open to visitors for tours and houses farm animals and prairie dogs on its grounds. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 11, 1974.

This place lets kids and adults really feel what it was like back in the homestead days. They let kids put on costumers and enter the old house and hold the tools. Very good spot.

Sort of neat to see sod home, but place is a little run down and the home is not totally original. They had the wood stove in a corner right next to the wood beams. The beams would have burned if the stove was there. Makes you wonder about some of the other stuff.

I was impressed to visit the historical site of homestead. other than that, I wasn't happy the customer service at the counter. There were two ladies working today, everything were fine until I started asking questions about the admission fee. $7 per person (adult) & $19 for a family. "How many people you count as a family?" I asked. A lady with short hair dye in black answered "4 in a group", another lady with gray hair answered but I forgot what she said, "5 of us in a group so do I need to pay $7 for extra person?" I asked again, the short black hair lady started becoming impatient, she said "total of $20.14; $19 plus tax" then she turned her face away and sighed never look at me again. Her co-worker didn't say much but nice was trying to help me. I wasn't sure what was the problem with the short black hair lady, maybe she had a bad day or I irritated her but she seemed to be nice to other customers who before me and after... smiling and chatting. Is she being racist?!!! i don't deserve to be treated like this! I spent 7 minutes at the historical site then left, no bye no thank you behind the door. I didn't feel welcome to this place, So I will not return to this shop ever again.

Woman at the front was not friendly at all. $5 for a small walk through of a historic building and an audio recording. You can get better elsewhere.

Really enjoyed looking at how early homesteaders lived. We got to see tons of prairie dogs up close and personal.
