The first organized fire protection in the city of Prattville was formed in 1850 and volunteers responded whenever a fire occurred. In 1965, Prattville hired it's first paid firefighters and operated with paid employees and volunteers. In the early 1970's, Prattville became a full-time paid department.
Currently the Prattville Fire Department serves a response area of 36 square miles (city) with Fire and EMS serving 33,960 citizens.
The Prattville Fire Department employees 84 employees which 12 employees are administrative located at the City Annex. The remaining 72 employees work a 24 on and 48 hour off schedule while operating the three fire stations located across the city. they staff three engine companies, one rescue company, three ambulances, and one command vehicle.
These employees also makeup several specialized rescue teams that include dive rescue, trench rescue, confine space rescue, rope rescue, hazardous materials response team, and two teams that are part of the Alabama Mutual Aid System swift water rescue team and a heavy and medium rescue team.
Of the 84 employees 51 are nationally registered paramedics.
The mission of the Prattville Fire Department is to protect lives and property by preventing the occurrence and minimizing the effects of fire, sudden illness, accidents, and disasters.
