PS1 is an artist-run extravaganza.
Public Space One (PS1) is a nonprofit arts organization operating as an expansive, collaborative, communal social sculpture. It runs on the sweat equity of artists, actors, activists, musicians, performers, writers, and other people. Through a variety of programs, presentations, and exhibitions in downtown Iowa City, it is an experimental platform for multiple forms of creative expression, social happenings, and other community-engaged activities.
PS1 is a tax-exempt 501(c)3 entity. It is located on the lower level of 120 N. Dubuque St in the Wesley Center.
This process-oriented, community art space hosts both private and communal art studios, a community print shop (@Iowa City Press Co-op), a kitchen, and is home to a plethora of programming including low-to-no-cost workshops, DIY music shows, Free Art School, and other performances/events.
Our mission is to serve the Iowa City community by providing a venue for innovative, experimental art, culture, music, and thought. It is our hope that by exposing our community to work that can often slip through the cracks of a commercial world, we will facilitate engagement and understanding of each other, of our experiences and expression, and have fun while doing so.
