I'm glad that we brought marking tape because the trail could use a bit of clarification. It's pretty great, especially for a 'non-operating' park. We met a park warden when we were packing up who was super friendly and told of how they're trying to develop the park. We did 1 overnight to Wolf Lake from Devil's Lake access point (roughly 7km).

A mostly unknown gem, but not for the faint of heart. We went in late October and had an entire lake to ourselves. Cold, wet but beautiful with no bugs that time of year. The most difficult part of the trip was getting to the lake with the campsite. There was one short but steep portage (steep out and in), but the most difficult part was crossing Head Lake to get to the river that lead to the portage. Both on our way into the park, and on our way out, we had strong winds and swells that caused us to take indirect routes to prevent capsizing the canoe. We were pretty exhausted by the time we got back to the landing. The park is very swampy. Lots of beaver dams and reedy shallows. It would be very, very buggy in the summer. We had to wear orange vests due to extensive hunting in the area. We fished and caught large mouth bass. The park is currently unmanaged - mostly not well maintained - and free to camp. There was plenty of dead wood to scavenge for firewood. Our campsite was large and had great views of the lake on three sides. There was a good thunderbox too. I would go back again, but not in bug season. And I may explore a different part of the park. More portages may be easier than crossing Head Lake on windy days!

Mini Algonquin. Great scenic paddling through lakes and rivers. Portages and sites are sometimes marked, sometimes not. Lots of cottages on Head Lake, but less and less as you get further into the park. Be prepared for some serious wind on Head Lake. Cell service is sketchy, mostly non existent with the exception of the occasional text that bounces through. Some of the more popular sites have thunder boxes which are usually marked with flagging tape. These are Backcountry sites, so no picnic tables or metal fire pits. Fire pits are stones. Some have grates that nice campers have packed in and left, so be sure to pay it forward and leave the sites better than you found them. Beautiful park. 🛶

The trail is really nice unfortunately most of the campsites are right on top of it and though marked it could do with a few more. Considering that it is a free to use Park the litter is actually very low and the trail is very well kept up.
